Friends,

I hope you have enjoyed these first few weeks of good weather! The rest and relaxation of this season gives us time to pause and reflect on an amazing year. After countless academic achievements, hard-fought athletic seasons, and superstar dramatic performances - the time has come at last to breathe and unwind.

Although our students have finished classes for the year, hundreds of them will be on campus in the coming months. They will join young men and women from local communities for several BC High Summer Programs. From sports clinics to driver's education, academic courses, test preparation, and even specialized programs including a Girls on Tech STEM camp - there's something for everyone on Morrissey Boulevard. Limited spaces are still available in select programs, and you can find more information by following this link.

And as these industrious students spend part of their summer learning and growing on campus, many more are beginning service work, summer jobs, internships, and various enrichment programs throughout Boston and beyond. We wish them the best of luck - and look forward to hearing more about their experiences in the fall.

Our faculty and staff will also be hard at work this summer, as teachers build lesson plans, attend professional development workshops and conferences, and further their education. Our staff will be on campus preparing for another successful year and the Office for Institutional Advancement is striving to meet our goal of $4 million dollars for the Fund for BC High before June 30. If you have not already made a gift, and would like to support our young men - please visit this link. Thank you!

I ask you to pray for our entire community to find success in all their endeavors this summer.

AMDG,
Class Awards for Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors
We often hear positive feedback from current and prospective families about how BC High doesn't feel as "big" as our size may seem. The class award assemblies held during the last week of school are among my favorite ways to foster this sense of tight-knit community.

There are many opportunities to celebrate the wide variety of accomplishments and accolades our community members earn throughout the year - from special recognition during liturgies and assemblies, to being featured on our social media channels or in BC High Magazine. But it is a rare treat to gather all of our students with their classmates and spend the morning celebrating their hard work, service and dedication. To view photos from these assemblies visit these links: Freshmen (Class of 2022), Sophomores (Class of 2021), and Juniors (Class of 2020).
A Toast & Roast - Celebrating Steve Hughes '73, P'98!
I want to extend tremendous gratitude on behalf of our entire community for the myriad ways in which our students and families, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends have come together this year to celebrate and honor our dear companion, Principal Steve Hughes '73, P'98.

Last week hundreds joined us on campus to Toast and Roast Steve's good nature, and so many more friends sent well wishes that were projected during the event (from as far away as Norway). Charlie Flint '73 was proud to announce that, through the Class of 1973's $50,000 Challenge, the Senior Class Gift, and Parent Give Day - 593 donors raised $218,022 for BC High in honor of Steve this year.

After Charles Shaw and Elise Wilson presented Steve with a gift on behalf of the Teacher's Association, Chair of the Board of Trustees Kelly Verrochi P'15 presented Claire Hughes P'98 with a gift to thank her and the Hughes family for sharing Steve with us for nearly 50 years.

The Roast followed, with hilarious routines from Hollis Brooks, Jack Travers P'09, past President Bill Kemeza, Steve's brothers Joe '78, Frank '80, and Peter '82, and his son Brendan Hughes '98.

Golden Eagles Brunch and Ascension Thursday Mass
On May 30 our community was blessed to be joined for the last liturgical celebration of the school year by dozens of parents and guardians, as well as our Golden Eagles from the Class of 1968 and beyond. To see more photos from the day, visit this link.
Honoring Our Retirees
The BC High community would like to congratulate the following faculty and staff members on their retirement. Our school is indebted to their decades of transformative service and we wish them the best in all things to come. Enjoy some well-deserved rest!

On the Boulevard
The end of the school year doesn't mean our Eagles will stop achieving! Here are just a few of the highlights that occurred in the last few weeks of classes:

  • Principal Hughes, Marian Basin, Kim Smith, and Charlie Drane surprised Melissa Ewing P'23 during one of her French classes, presenting her with the prestigious Archdiocese of Boston Excellence in Education Award. Ms. Ewing is one of just five secondary school teachers throughout the Archdiocese to receive the honor this year, which includes a prize and luncheon with Cardinal Seán O’Malley and Superintendents of Archdiocese of Boston Catholic Schools Kathy Mears and Thomas W. Carroll

  • Giacomo Coraluppi ’19 and Charlie McMahon ’19 attended the Cardinal Medeiros Scholarship Reception at Boston University. Both young men received the full-tuition scholarship for graduating seniors from high schools in the Archdiocese of Boston, selected for their outstanding academic achievement, leadership ability, and community service. They had the opportunity to meet Provost Jean Morrison, as well as Rev. David Barnes, Chaplain of the BU Catholic Center, and Most Rev. Robert Reed, Auxiliary Bishop of Boston.

  • The BC High Robotics team recently visited AmazonRobotics to discuss teamwork, elegant solutions, and cutting-edge technology. Special thanks to Andrew Turner P’24 for setting it up!

  • Several Hyde Center and service trips are currently in action across the country and world! Follow us on social media for regular updates on their experiences, like this video from Belize, where Allie McCourt, Oderra Jones, and 12 juniors built a house with Hand in Hand Ministries for a couple named Andre and Dominique to live in with their 3 children.
