Update from the Executive Director

Today I'm sitting on a rock behind the Guthrie Theater, along the riverbank, listening to the birds, while enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. Lots of joggers, bikers, and dog-walkers zoom by taking advantage of the trail leading into Mill Ruins Park (and what do you call those cross-country skis on wheels!?). What a beautiful neighborhood and glorious day!

When I was a brand-new parent, I reflected on the dichotomy of simultaneously wanting to hold on and let go. I'm sure I wasn't the first to conclude that this is the essential and lifelong struggle of parenthood. Teach them to be independent AND stay connected in relationship with you. I'm realizing now that this tug-of-war is not singular to parenthood. I've been part of several conversations lately regarding a similar issue as we get older. How do we ask for help? We don't want to appear weak or vulnerable - our pride and long-sought independence won't allow it! How do we offer help without implying, "you are weaker and need help!" There is no easy answer; I look forward to having more conversations and delving into this topic further.

I'm asking YOU - our members, friends, and partners - to consider helping us spread the word about the unique community we have built in Mill City Commons. Perhaps you could forward this email to someone in your network who might not have heard of us. Several of the events featured below are open to guests. Sign up; invite someone; tell people about the friendships, educational and cultural programs, social activities, and anything and everything else you love about MCC!

Take care, and enjoy the rest of your week.

MILL CITY COMMONS: We learn. We share. We engage. We give.

MCC Women Connect
Thursday, June 20, 10:00 - 11:30 am
The Landings, 510 River St
At this month's MCC Women Connect Sylvia Kaplan will lead a discussion around the question, "Do we ever grow up or do we just get old?" What does it mean to  grow up? To mature? At our current developmental stage, as we look back, how did we and how do we make sense of our lives? What people, things, art, books, experiences have served as touchstones in your development as a human being? That created meaning at that stage of your life?

MCC Women Connect's purpose is to gather to connect and grow, sharing our experiences and learning from each other as we adapt to life's changes and transitions. Discussion ideas come from members, volunteer facilitators and a list of suggestions being developed. We meet once a month, from 10:00-11:30 a.m., on the third Thursday.

MCC Evening Book Club
Tuesday, July 9, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
RiverWest Social Room, 401 S 1st St
Join us to discuss  Washington Black by Esi Edugyan. George Washington Black, or "Wash," an 11-year-old field slave on a Barbados sugar plantation, is terrified to be chosen by his master's brother as his manservant. To his surprise, the eccentric Christopher Wilde turns out to be a naturalist, explorer, inventor, and abolitionist. Soon Wash is initiated into a world where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky, where even a boy born in chains may embrace a life of dignity and meaning--and where two people, separated by an impossible divide, can begin to see each other as human. But when a man is killed and a bounty is placed on Wash's head, Christopher and Wash must abandon everything. What follows is their flight along the eastern coast of America, and, finally, to a remote outpost in the Arctic. What brings Christopher and Wash together will tear them apart, propelling Wash even further across the globe in search of his true self.

NOTE: Limited guest parking is available in the RiverWest garage. Register your car in the building lobby. There's also a pay lot on the woonerf between the Abiitan and Mill City Quarter buildings (on the back side of RiverWest) that's available for public parking from 6-10 pm Mon-Fri. Note that the parking meters are not owned by the city and the city parking app can NOT be used with them. Pay at the station in the lot.

The MCC Evening Book Club usually meets on the first Tuesday of every other month. Upcoming gatherings are on September 3 and November 5.
