Message From the Principal
January 2021

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy New Year!  Baraboo High School counselors and teachers are beginning the process of meeting with current 9th-11th graders to discuss the course registration process for the 2021-2022 school year.  In order to assist your student in selecting courses for the 2021-2022 school year, please take some time to visit the Baraboo High School Course Description Handbook. It can be found at the Baraboo High School website at http://www.baraboo.k12.wi.us/schools/high/.  Once there in the right-hand column under "BHS Resources," click on "Course Description Book."  We hope to see each student pushing themselves by choosing classes that stretch them and help prepare them for college and career readiness.  Students will be expected to have completed the course selection process by Friday, January 29, 2021. Students will have time set aside during homeroom on January 25th and January 26th to complete their choices but are also able to log into Xello at any time to make their selections. Students may also set appointments to meet with their counselor prior to the deadline for support through this process.  As always, we continue to work as a faculty and staff to provide the students of Baraboo High School an experience that enriches their lives and prepares them for any college or career they choose.

Looking ahead, the juniors will be taking the statewide ACT Plus Writing assessment on Tuesday, March 9th. On March 9th, freshmen, sophomores, and seniors will not report to school.  It is our hope that testing with only juniors in the building on March 9th will contribute to a distraction-free environment that will be conducive to students being able to perform at their very best on this important assessment.  Juniors will be allowed to leave school for the remainder of the day at the conclusion of the ACT Plus Writing assessment which we expect to conclude around 12:45 p.m. Lunch in the cafeteria will be offered for the juniors on March 9th from 12:45-1:30 p.m. Students may stay in the commons following lunch if they are waiting to take the bus home.

Please be advised that at their January 11th meeting, the School District of Baraboo Board of Education approved a request from the Baraboo High School staff to implement asynchronous Wednesdays. As such, Baraboo High School will make a shift to asynchronous learning on Wednesdays during the second semester, starting Wednesday, January 27th, 2021, and continuing through the end of the 2020-21 school year, barring no significant changes precipitated by the pandemic.  Asynchronous for teaching and learning means that students can engage with instruction anytime and from anywhere. For our asynchronous Wednesdays, students will engage with teaching and learning remotely from their homes in lieu of coming in-person to school for their instruction.

I am looking forward to the start of the second semester of the school year on January 25th and want you to know that I appreciate and welcome your ideas, concerns, and questions. I can be reached by calling the school at (608) 355-3940 or my email is [email protected]. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Glenn Bildsten
Baraboo High School Principal
Face Coverings Still Required
The School District of Baraboo would like to remind our families that per school district policy, face coverings will continue to be required while on school premises until further notice.

The District is requiring face coverings for students 5-years of age and older while on school premises. We ask that parents/guardians also wear face coverings while on school property when dropping off or picking up students.

Please note, the District is currently using the following definition of "face covering:"
"Face Covering" means a piece of cloth or other material that is worn to cover the nose and mouth completely. A "face covering" includes but is not limited to a bandana, a cloth face mask, a disposable or paper mask, a neck gaiter, or a religious face covering. A "face covering" does not include face shields, mesh masks, masks with holes or openings, or masks with vents.

Click here for the District's Face Covering Response Protocol. Thank you for working with the District to provide a safe environment for our students to be engaged, challenged and inspired!
Asynchronous Wednesdays start Jan. 27
The School District of Baraboo sent the following information via Infinite Campus.

The Board of Education recently approved for allowing Baraboo High School to make a shift to asynchronous learning on Wednesdays during the second semester, starting Wednesday, January 27th, 2021, and continuing through the end of the 2020-21 school year, barring no significant changes precipitated by the pandemic.

What does asynchronous mean?
Asynchronous for teaching and learning means that students can engage with instruction anytime and from anywhere. For our asynchronous Wednesdays, students will engage with teaching and learning remotely from their homes in lieu of coming in-person to school for their instruction.

What does an asynchronous Wednesday look like for my student and family?
Starting January 27th, Baraboo High School students will not report to school on Wednesdays.  A small number of students needing specialized services, such as students with disabilities and English learners, may be provided some instruction and support in the school building. Members of our Student Services Team may connect with families to offer these in-person services as appropriate on Wednesdays.

On these Wednesdays, Baraboo High School students are expected to participate in teaching and learning remotely from home. Teachers will post activities in Google Classroom for their students to complete during the time they would normally spend in school on Wednesdays. Additionally, students who are participating fully virtual should expect connections from their teachers to better support their at-home learning.

Why this shift occurring and only at Baraboo High School?
Concurrent instruction is only occurring at Baraboo High School. In our 4K-8th grades and other school buildings, the District has been able to assign individual teachers in-person students or virtual students only.  Baraboo High School teachers have been providing concurrent instruction, meaning they facilitate teaching and learning for in-person students and virtual students at the same time. This is necessary due to the content expertise of our staff and the desire to offer a rich curriculum with many offerings to all of our students. This is a significant challenge and requires additional preparation. With this shift on Wednesdays, Baraboo High School teachers can devote additional time on Wednesdays to connecting with virtual students through Google Meets to support their unique instructional needs and also provide additional preparation time to better support all of our students.

Students will still be able to access a free hot lunch for the day and breakfast for the next day curbside at Baraboo High School from 11 - 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays. We are asking that you pre-order by 9am that day by calling 608-355-3980 and following the prompts on the message. You can pick up for multiple students and they do not need to be present to pick it up.
