Rector's Ramblings

While on vacation the last two weeks, I very much enjoyed the opportunity to worship with churches where I was not required to be on or up front. Both Sundays I was away, we worshipped with a St. James; St. James, Hendersonville, NC, and St. James, Lancaster, PA. The latter is my home parish, and while I wasn't there in person, I enjoyed worshipping from my living room the morning after we returned from our travels. St. James in Hendersonville was an enjoyable Sunday morning in a beautiful church with friendly people. It was our first time visiting, and I'm glad we were able to worship there.

My Livestream participation in the liturgy of St. James, Lancaster was special, not just because I grew up there and spent my first three years of ordained ministry there, but because this was the Sunday they were decommissioning the church's organ. I decided I wanted to watch from afar rather than attend another church closer to home. It was most definitely the right choice for me.

Worship

Summer Worship Schedule
The summer worship schedule is now in effect. Regular weekend worship services take place on Saturdays at 5:30 pm at St. Ignatius Chapel, on Demere Road, and on Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:15 am and 11:15 am at Christ Church, Frederica.

Kidurgy all summer!
Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for younger children, takes place during the 9:15 am worship service. Children have their own service in the Kidurgy room of the Parish Hall, with singing, scripture and prayer, then return to receive Communion with their families. Contact: Mtr. Katie at [email protected]

Women's Book Study
The women's study group meets on Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the parish hall. They are currently reading Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith by Barbara Brown Taylor.  On August 1, they will begin a study of An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith . Ashton Williston at [email protected] .
Men's Study Group - Taking a Summer Break
The Men's Discussion Group, which meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am, is currently on hiatus until late July . For more information, please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .
Icon Writing Workshop - August 26-30IconWorkshop
The fourth annual icon writing workshop will be held August 26-30 in the Christ Church parish hall. The instructor this year is Kara Nelson. Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon, a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. The group will work from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, but you may work more or less as your eyes, body and soul are so inclined. Each day will begin with a brief worship and Eucharist filled with instruction about icons. The cost is $375. No previous experience is needed and all materials will be furnished. Just bring a lunch and a willingness to learn. Contact: Mtr. Becky at [email protected] .
Icon Writing Group - On Holiday
Please note that the Icon Writing Group that meets on Fridays at 12:00 pm and Saturdays at 10:00 am is taking a break for the month of July. They will resume meeting on Friday, August 2. For more information, please contact David Blatchford at [email protected]

CHILDREN'S BOOKS STILL NEEDED!
This summer, we are collecting children's books for youngsters living in Glynn County. Many thanks to all who have already donated! The books that were distributed were enthusiastically received by the children, but we still need more!

Please bring new or gently used children's book for ages Pre-K through 6th Grade to the church office in the Parish Hall, during regular business hours on weekdays, or on Sundays, from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. For more information, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected] .
Backpack Buddies
School will be starting again before you know it and so will the need for weekend food bags for children here in Glynn County. You can help by sponsoring a child for $100 for the school year, or by helping the Backpack Buddies fill bags for monthly food distribution. Please join us on on packing days on the following Wednesdays at 10:00 am:  August 14, August 28, September 11 and September 25. Tour of Homes 2020 Is Ramping Up!
Many hands make light the work...

As the planning begins for the March 21, 2020 Tour of Homes, there are openings for committee chairpersons. We are looking for men and women to share their talents in the following areas: benefactors, marketing, tour buses, ToH kick-off party, celebration party assistant, and signage. We're happy that so many folks have already stepped up to chair various committees and look forward to filling the rest of these vital positions with more talented volunteers!

If you'd like to help with this most worthwhile project, please contact the chairs, Susie Henning and Tami Black.
