Mills and Burlingame High Schools Honored by County for Sustainability Efforts

Congratulations to both Mills and Burlingame High Schools - both were recently recognized as winners in San Mateo County's One Planet Schools Challenge.

Mills was recognized in the Campus and Operations Category, which honors schools that have focused on greening facilities and operations by reducing their ecological footprint and carbon footprint to zero impact, and making ecologically beneficial choices.

Burlingame was recognized in the Community Awareness and Action category, which recognizes schools that e ngage the internal and external community in actions that walk the talk of sustainability, and contribute to a sustainable paradigm shift at the local level.

The purpose of the San Mateo County Office of Education's (SMCOE) One Planet Schools Challenge is to identify leaders who are doing meaningful sustainability work at districts and sites, and to recognize them for their impact on the greater community. This recognition and awards program fosters a culture of sustainability in school communities across the county by providing a structure and roadmap for achieving the vision of whole-school sustainability integration.

September 12:  Managing the College Admission Frenzy - Why "Fit" Matters

The college admissions process can be a source of stress and anxiety for students and parents alike. This research-based workshop addresses many of the important questions we hear from families. What do college rankings really measure? Are students who attend more selective colleges better off later in life? What is "fit" and why does it matter?

Participants will learn practical strategies to help reduce unnecessary pressure around the college admissions process and ways to support their student's overall well-being and readiness for life in college and beyond. Participants will leave with practical strategies to apply at home and at school.

Registration will be open in mid August.

Spanish and Chinese interpretation will be provided.

This program is presented by the San Mateo Union High School District in partnership with Stanford University's Challenge Success program and the GATE Parents Group.
