Update: 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Project

Marshfield Clinic Health System AmeriCorps recently provided an update on the soldier gift bags that were assembled during the 9/11 National Day of Service event at the Lions Camp in Rosholt, Wisconsin.

Donna Nickel and Marlene Cops accepted the solider gift bags on behalf of the Appleton Military Support Group in Appleton, WI. The 50 gift bags were assembled as part of the 9/11 National Day of Service project at the Wisconsin Lions Camp hosted by Marshfield Clinic Health System AmeriCorps in September of 2017 and sponsored with funds from Serve Wisconsin along with numerous donations.

The gift bags for soldiers included items like patriotic fidget spinners, candy, sunscreen, lip balm, popcorn salts, jerky and more. The bags were donated to the support group and were mailed out for the holidays to soldiers serving overseas in the Middle East.

Each year the Appleton Military Support Group mails out over 300 packages to deployed soldiers, paid for with money donated from bake sales, veterans charities and more. Donna Nickel, the coordinator said it would cost about $4 per package to mail each of the 50 donated.

Member Reflection: Shaynne Pryor
AmeriCorps Member with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee Art Advocate Program

Ever since the beginning of the summer, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee's AmeriCorps Program has served as a template of positive change in Milwaukee's future. When I was previously a Youth Worker at one of the legacy sites, I was a part-time student engaged in one of the most troubled neighborhoods in all of Milwaukee. Since the members were of African-American culture, I was able to easily blend and relate to them with ease. However, when I was introduced to the Boys and Girls Clubs' AmeriCorps program for this summer, my experience from the initial time at the legacy sites as a Youth Worker quickly became something of another world.
