June 16 | The Rev. Canon Jan Naylor Cope, Guest Preacher

The Rev. Canon Jan Naylor Cope  is a former senior warden of St. John's Church, Lafayette Square, where she was a member for more than 20 years. St. John's was her sponsoring parish during the ordination process, and she now serves as the Provost of Washington National Cathedral.

Canon Cope will preach at 7:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Students will come in to church to join their families for Communion.

We need three leaders each Sunday. We will provide the curriculum, training, and supplies. If you are interested in teaching, please email Savannah Ponder or sign up here.

Consider Being a Mentor
Communities in Schools is seeking a mentor for a ninth grade boy in the International Academy of Cardozo School. The student speaks English well and is interested in basketball. Ideally, the mentor would visit with him 2-4 times a month to shoot baskets or engage in other activities. If you would like to make a difference for this young man and can make this kind of commitment, please contact Livy More.
Summer 2020 | Youth Pilgrimage to Kwasa College

Rising high school juniors and seniors are invited to participate in a pilgrimage next summer to Kwasa College in Springs, Gauteng, South Africa. Kwasa is an educational center for children ages 3-grade 5. St. John's has had a long relationship with Kwasa, both supporting their ministry financially and sending volunteers to visit the community. The Rev. Sharron Dinnie, the rector of Kwasa, has warmly invited St. John's youth to return to Kwasa next summer to build relationships, serve with the school, and learn more about their ministries with children.

The requirements leading up to this pilgrimage would be participation in the following: monthly group meetings for prayer, faith formation, and fundraising planning, hosting fundraising events at St. John's leading up to the trip, and leading one presentation at St. John's after the trip. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please contact Savannah Ponder, Assistant for Ministries to Children, Youth, and Families.
The Environmental Cost of Beef and Dairy Consumption
Domesticated livestock, mostly cows and pigs, account for some 60% of the biomass of all land mammals. Humans make up another 36%. Wild animals only account for the remaining 4%. Is it any wonder that human activity impacts the planet? The carbon footprint of our agriculture is huge. Livestock drive almost 80% of the use of global agricultural land for grazing and growing feed (for animals, not humans). Ruminants, such as cattle and sheep, further impact the environment by pollution through fossil fuel use, animal methane, effluent waste, and water needs. Cutting back on red meat by just a third, and replacing it with pork, poultry or legumes would drop our individual food related emissions by 13% ... without even considering the health aspects of such a diet change.

- St. John's Care of Creation Group

In coordination with the Care of Creation Group's efforts to stop the use of items, such as plastic shopping bags, that are harmful to the environment, St. John's has produced reusable tote bags with the St. John's logo. Please contact the office or see a greeter on Sunday mornings to pick up a bag for your use.
ICYMI: Welcome Rev. Robert Fisher, called as 15th Rector of St. John's Church
From a letter from the Wardens on April 7, 2019:

Dear Fellow Parishioners and Friends of St. John's Church:

We are writing to share the wonderful news that the Vestry has voted unanimously to call the Rev. Robert W. Fisher as the 15th Rector  of St. John's Church and that he has accepted that call!  Rob's first Sunday with us will be June 23, 2019 .

A Message from the Rector Transition Committee
In order to help settle our wonderful new rector, Rob Fisher, and his family in Washington and at St. John's, the vestry has formed a Rector Transition Committee. The Committee is chaired by Nora Rigby, and members are Betsy Danello, Laura Herzog, Andrew Hunt, Frank Klotz, Sara McGanity, and Holly Sukenik. Rob, his wife Sarah Wood, and their daughter, Zoe are all very excited to meet the parishioners of St. John's. Stay tuned for more information as events are scheduled.
A Message from the Wardens on Security
Dear Fellow Parishioners:
We have all been shaken by the numerous recent attacks on houses of worship around the world. These incidents have left us all concerned about safety at our beloved St. John's Church. Rest assured that St. John's will continue to be open and welcoming, as it has for over 200 years. But we will also be vigilant. Our staff, led by Director of Operations Kim Carlson, is in regular communication with homeland security agencies at both the federal and local levels. Earlier this year, the United States Department of Homeland Security performed a comprehensive vulnerability and risk analysis of both our facilities and operations. We have just received their report and are in the process of reviewing and prioritizing their recommendations as part of a wide-ranging plan for enhancing the safety and security of our church and parish house. As you might guess, some changes will be clearly visible while others might be subtler or not visible at all, but they will all be designed to assure the safe continuity of our worship and programs.

Feel free to be in touch with comments, suggestions or questions.

Richard Metzger, Senior Warden
Paul Barkett, Junior Warden
Email Phishing Alert
There have been reports of email phishing attempts at St. John's recently. Scammers create fraudulent email addresses and send email posing as our clergy or staff to ask for money for emergencies or favors.

Any email from clergy or staff should have an address that ends with stjohns-dc.org. Common phishing attempts use very similar looking email addresses from free services like Gmail or Yahoo.

Please do not open any suspicious emails that may come from any account. Delete them immediately. If you are unsure, please contact the Church Office (202-347-8766) for assistance.
Parking Policy from our Neighbors
car-sales-lot2.jpg
The AFL-CIO has asked us to park only American-made vehicles on their property. In an effort to be good neighbors, we are asking parishioners to respect their policy.

If you have questions, please contact Kim Carlson, Director for Operations.
