TROOPER NIC CEDERBERG

On May 22, 2019 , President Trump awarded fourteen (14) law enforcement professionals with the National Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor. Trooper Nic Cederberg, of the Oregon State Police, was one of these deserving law enforcement professionals.

Back on December 25, 2016 , Trooper Cederberg was severely wounded when he attempted to apprehended a suspect who had just murdered his wife. There was a vehicle pursuit and then Trooper Cederberg became involved in a gun battle with the suspect.

During this gun battle Trooper Cederberg was shot 12 times. It has also been reported that it seems almost certain that the subject involved fired the last few rounds at Trooper Cederberg while he was standing directly over him --- execution style.

As other officers arrived at the scene, the gun battle continued. The bad guy was eventually shot 21 times and the medical examiner stated that one of these shots was a self-inflicted shot to the head.

As a result of the gunshots Trooper Cederberg sustained, he now suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and he has permanent disabilities too. At least one bullet remains near the base of his spine and he also has some bullet fragments in one of his arms, where he was shot 6 times. Trooper Cederberg's wife now apparently serves as his constant caregiver.

I definitely don't want to take away from the heroism that Trooper Cederberg exhibited back in December of 2016, but it is interesting to note that now he is also involved in some civil litigation as a result of this deadly event.

One suit is against the 911 dispatch center that originally handled this call. Trooper Cederberg alleges that he was never advised some very critical information that he should have been told. The original call was apparently only dispatched as an "attempt to locate" (the subject), and Trooper Cederberg was not initially advised that the subject had just shot and killed his wife, and was armed and may be suicidal.

Trooper Cederberg seeks damages for past and current pain and suffering, and also damages for future pain and suffering, too. I'm not quite sure what the exact amount is, but he is seeking damages that amount to many millions of dollars .

Besides the video from television station KOIN, which is excellent, there is also some video from the chase itself, crime scene video, officer body cam video, plus the last few violent seconds when the wanted suspect is again encountered by officers assisting Trooper Cederberg (who had already been shot 12 times). It is truly a miracle that this brave Trooper survived and I would recommend that you definitely watch this video.

FROM THE MOVIES

The Netflix movie "The Highwaymen" tells the true story of Bonnie and Clyde during the two violent years when they robbed and murdered their way through Texas and the Midwest. Unlike the 1967 movie starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, which told their story from their own point of view, the Netflix movie tells the story from the side of the law enforcement officers who eventually hunted these vicious killers down, and then killed them. Bonnie and Clyde, who reportedly killed 13 people, which included nine law enforcement officers , were themselves killed on May 23, 1934 . They were killed when they were ambushed near Gibsland, Louisiana.

Originally, I intended only to post a short critique of "The Highwaymen" movie, because I found it to be very interesting, entertaining and informative. But, as I dealt even further into the Bonnie and Clyde legend I found that there was much more to talk about than just the movie itself.

I quickly learned that the 1967 movie, in many different ways, was not at all accurate. Frank Hamer was one of the Texas Rangers who eventually tracked Bonnie and Clyde down. The 1967 film portrayed Frank Hamer as a vengeful and humiliated bungler. In the film he was captured by Bonnie and Clyde, and then they released him. None of this ever happened .

In 1968, Captain Hamer's widow and son sued the movie producers because of the untrue and negative portrayal of the famed Texas Ranger. They sued for defamation of character. In 1971 they were apparently awarded an out-of-court settlement.

It is a fact that suicides involving retired military personnel, and law enforcement professionals, occur at a much higher rate than that of the general population.

In my book I discuss suicide and the law enforcement profession.

In my book I also described my volunteer work with my local 2-1-1 crisis hotline, which also handled the Suicide Prevention Lifeline calls for the Tallahassee area. If you would like to help and make a difference you might want to volunteer with your local 2-1-1.
