Jumpstart Recognizes Broward County as Read for the Record District Award of the Year
Broward County has been recognized as the Read for the Record District of the Year Award! A supporter of Read for the Record since its beginning 14 years ago, Broward County is one of Jumpstart’s longest-standing partners for the campaign and has the widest participation within a single county.   Read more

Our Read for the Record event at the ELC was a great success! Broward County Commissioner/Senator Nan Rich and Broward Couny School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson served as guest readers to about 20 children and their families from across Broward County. Families also enjoyed a delicious catered dinner and a fun arts and crafts station . View more photos from the event .

Celebration of the Hands
Want your children’s hand art on display at the Capitol? Join in the Celebration of the Hands! Tens of thousands of pieces of “hand art” will be hung throughout the Capitol Rotunda Sunday, Jan. 26 – Friday, Jan. 31, 2020 creating an amazing display of children’s art.

To participate, please drop off your students artwork to the ELC Broward office no later than Jan. 15, 2020.

What is Coaching? What is CLASS? What is Coaching with CLASS? This training is designed to help participants learn about the coaching process as a partnership that focuses on teacher concerns to identify and establish specific goals.

Building Strong Foundations with My Teachstone. This training is designed to engage teachers in using resources available through My Teachstone.
The First Chapter: Emergent Reading in VPK . In this training, educators will understand the importance of the developmental sequence of pre-reading skills and its connection to the Florida 4 Year Old Standards.

Legislative Updates
As the Florida State Legislature Committee Meetings continue throughout November and December, the ELC has been actively involved with the legislative process. We've also met with State Senators and Representatives here in Broward as well as in Tallahassee and have voiced our legislative priorities and recommendations. Some of these include an increase in the Basic Student Allocation for VPK, counting learning gains made during the VPK year, evaluating the socio-emotional development of the child, as well as administering a Kindergarten Readiness tool at the end of VPK year before summer slide (instead of at the beginning of the Kindergarten year.  We will continue to keep our providers apprised as these issues evolve.
