Accepting Proposals: Serve Wisconsin RFPs

Serve Wisconsin has released two Request for Proposals (RFPs) for AmeriCorps programs and AmeriCorps planning grants for the 2017-18 program year. Program grants engage AmeriCorps members in service to meet community needs, while planning grants help organizations to develop an AmeriCorps program. A mandatory Notification of Intent to Apply (NOI) is due May 3rd. NOI submission for program grants can be found here and NOI submission for planning grants can be found here. Proposals and additional documents from eligible applicants (those who submitted a NOI by the deadline) are due May 17th. Thank You: Jessica Kessler, Serve Wisconsin Program Officer

We would like to extend a very special thank you to Jessica Kessler for her four and a half years of service as a Program Officer with Serve Wisconsin.

Jessica's technical expertise and can-do attitude have been instrumental to both the Serve Wisconsin team and AmeriCorps programs across the state. Jessica saw the need to improve the evaluation capacity of Serve Wisconsin and the Wisconsin AmeriCorps programs. She took the initiative to immerse herself in program evaluation best practices and found outside resources for AmeriCorps programs looking to improve. She is also keenly aware of the power of the individual volunteer and spearheaded Serve Wisconsin's efforts to receive Volunteer Generation Funds enabling Wisconsin nonprofits to learn how to best manage and utilize volunteers at all levels of their operations.

Under her leadership, guidance and dedication existing AmeriCorps programs have improved and new applicants have been placed on the road to success. She is able to envision projects and see them through to completion by addressing problems with innovative solutions. Jessica will be leaving the Serve Wisconsin team at the beginning of this month to pursue an exciting new position with the DHS Division of Public Health. We know that she will excel in her new role and we wish her all the best!
Member Reflection: Xavier Prince, Milwaukee Christian Center

"When I entered the YouthBuild program in the year of 2014, it began something that would prove to be a life changing experience for me. I entered the YouthBuild program without any short-term or long-term goals. Since I've been in the program, I have goals that I want to accomplish such as receiving my GED, getting my driver's license and getting on a career pathway, rather than just getting a job. I have decided on a career in the trades, and hope to seek an apprenticeship in the plumbing field.

I'm doing a second term. Last year we finished building a house on 22nd and Greenfield and we had an Open House ceremony. This was a real highlight of the term for me. The buyers of the new house were there; an immigrant family from Southeast Asia. How wonderful it was to see them. They were so thrilled to have a home of their own. There were friends and family and food, some of the members even brought their families out to view the house."
