Greetings, Community Partners –
As we reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
Dr. King is deservedly considered one of the most significant figures in our country’s history. As we reflect upon his legacy, let’s always remember that his significance lies in the impact that his life has had on others—-on all of us.
I am a true believer that the best way we can honor him is by making sure that we are doing our parts to make the lives of others better. However we have been given the opportunity to serve, whether in our jobs or within our communities, we should do so with the selflessness and purpose that exemplifies everything that Dr. King stood for.
While 2020 was a challenging year, I am convinced that we can make 2021 better simply by continually asking ourselves, “What are we doing for others?”

At Lone Star College-Houston North, we are entering as strong as we have been. As classes begin Tuesday, we are in the midst of an unusual trend in which our spring semester enrollment is actually higher than what we had in the fall.
We are in the process of completing about $4 million worth of renovations to our Fairbanks, Greenspoint, and Victory facilities and have started the planning for an additional 20,000 sq ft addition to Victory.
|
|
Our fourth facilities, LSC-Houston North Fallbrook, will have students enrolled this spring. In addition, over the past two years (counting the planning for LSC-HN), we have added nearly 50 talented faculty, staff, and administrators that are working with our students in new and innovative ways.

Our students continue to perform well in terms of course success rates, showing that our new model is working. In addition, we are expecting to have a significant number of graduates at the end of this academic year thus placing us on a path towards our ambitious goal of having a 3 year graduation rate on 25% by 2025 (which would place us among the top colleges in the state).
Thanks to the commitment of our Chancellor and Board of Trustees we are also financially stronger than we have been. We are on pace to finish our second year within our allocation. While this is the norm/expectation of all colleges, I am pleased that we have been able to do so while adding a significant amount of new staff and multiple new academic/workforce programs.
|
|
Lastly, thanks to each of our wonderful community partners, we are able to provide a range of services for our students. Our Panther Pact is healthy (though additional donations are welcomed), thanks to the YMCA and the Houston Food Bank, we now have food distributions scheduled through June. Due to Comcast, we can offer our students six months of Internet assistance. Due to the generosity of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office and our Chancellor laptop initiative, we can provide students with laptops. In addition, we are able to provide curbside meals due to partnerships with Burns BBQ.

|
I am proud of these accomplishments for we could not have scripted a more challenging start to the our new college. We are entering our fourth semester. During the first, we were focused upon receiving our initial accreditation. During the other three, we have faced a pandemic.
We still have a long ways to go, but I am grateful for where we are. For the past several years, I take the first month of the year to fast, reflect, and set goals for the upcoming year. For 2021, my desire is for the college to stabilize and grow into the purpose that Dr. Head, our Board of Trustees, and our supportive communities intended for us to be.
I wish each of you the best. Have a wonderful new year.
Sincerely,
Quentin Wright, Ed.D.
President, Lone Star College-Houston North

Did You Know?
At LSC-Houston North we put students first. Each first time in college student receives a faculty mentor to help guide them through their first year of college. Research indicates that effective mentoring is one of the most powerful relationships for influencing human behavior.
Sometimes, all a student need is someone to lend a caring ear. Just being able to speak to someone and share troubles, feelings, emotions and fears has a way of making these issues seem smaller. Our mentors are in place to provide guidance for our students and steer them in the right direction.

Mentor Program \\ Student Testimony
“My experience on having a personal mentor has been very helpful especially since this is my first year in college. I was skeptical at first because I didn’t know what to expect I didn’t know anybody, and I didn’t know I had many benefits as a student. However, when my mentor showed up in my EDUC class and presented himself before all this pandemic thing. He came in with a PowerPoint that provided me with many helpful information and it honestly made me feel a little peace because I knew I had someone to go to whenever I needed help. Even after they closed the schools, he was keeping in touch with me. He made sure I was okay, and he asked me if I needed any help with food or any other essentials. Which I did he helped me to get internet access and a laptop to keep up with my classes and not fall behind. I am very great full to have him as my personal mentor. Therefore, I truly believe having a mentor helps out a lot especially first-time college students like me.”
