Inclusive Language across Latin America

CLAS, in collaboration with Union Institute & University's Institute for Social Justice, presents a new series of conversations about inclusive language. This free series will take place on Zoom and consist of 3 panels (all times EDT):

• Oct. 13, 2-4pm: Spanish
• Nov. 2, 4-6pm: Portuguese
• Nov. 15, 4-6pm: Indigenous Languages (Nahuatl, Quechua, Yucatec Maya)

The series will offer a panorama of inclusive language in these languages in terms of its linguistic manifestation, adoption by speakers, relationship to gender roles and cultural norms, connection to social movements and human rights, etc. Each conversation will be led by a diverse team of panelists with unique expertise and perspectives who will educate and challenge us on these topics.

Book Launch: Andean Violin Manual

Join us on Thurs, Sept. 30th at 3:30pm (EDT) via Zoom to celebrate the launch of a new Andean Violin Methods Manual.

The Andean Violin Methods Manual is based on long-term research and immersion in the cultural and musical practices of Imbabura, Ecuador. Researched and written by Andean musicians and educators, the book gathers essential aspects for learning Andean violin, presents an alternative study of the violin featuring the particular interpretation this instrument is given in the hands of Andean musicians, and offers a set of exercises/methods that draw on the local culture.

Development of the manual was supported in part by CLAS. The virtual book launch event reflects an ongoing collaboration among the K'acha Willaykuna Andean and Amazonian Indigenous Art and Humanities GAHDT project, CLAS, ASCTech, and AWANA Network of Indigenous Intercultural Community Artists and Cultural Administrators.

Call for Proposals: OLAC 2022

The 18th annual Ohio Latin Americanist Conference will take place February 25-26, 2022 at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

The organizers invite all Latin Americanists and Latinx Studies scholars, educators, and students from institutions of higher education to submit proposals by Friday, Dec. 10, 2021. Submit proposals here.

Unique features of OLAC include panel sessions for creative writing, translation, and for high school teachers. First-time conference presenters may also choose to give a 10-minute mini presentation.

(Hablando con las paredes)

In preparation for an upcoming book presentation event with OSU Quechua Instructor Elvia Andía Grágeda, the SPPO Creative Writing Group and Abya Yala Student Organization invite you to enjoy Andía Grágeda's recent award-winning novel, Pirqakunawan parlaspa (Hablando con las paredes).

Thirty free copies of the book are now available for pick-up (first come, first served) in Hagerty Hall 121, in preparation for the book talk to be held Fri, Oct. 8, at 4pm in Hagerty Hall 160. Refreshments will be served in the Hagerty Courtyard following the book presentation event.

Under the U.S. Department of Education's Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies program, CLAS offers summer and academic year fellowships for graduate and undergraduate students who need advanced training in language and area studies.
The next application window for FLAS fellowships will open in early November '21, with a February '22 deadline. Stay tuned!
