Cornell Retiree Engagement
Survey & Report
|
|
In May 2019, the Division Human Resources invited retired faculty, academics, and staff to participate in its inaugural Cornell Retiree Engagement Survey.
Eight hundred fifty-one retirees responded, inspiring us with detailed accounts of encore careers, creative endeavors, travels, awards, publications, and campus/community involvement!
A report of the results and many photos and quotes from Cornell retirees is now publicly available. In addition, we have compiled four supplemental documents of survey comments (in each retiree’s own words, with identifying information removed) related to specific survey questions.
Cornell retirees helped shape and care for Cornell campuses; educated and supported generations of students; advanced research and publications; developed and implemented programs; and much more. Your contributions have furthered Cornell’s reputation for excellence and paved the way for today’s achievements.
We hope you enjoy this report, which is a true celebration of Cornell's 5,779 retired faculty, academics, and staff!
About the survey
The survey was administered by Cornell HR Analytics and guided by the HR Retiree Engagement Advisory Committee (HR REAC). The committee is comprised of retired faculty and staff, department representatives (Benefits, Wellness, Work/Life, etc.), and community experts. HR REAC advises on matters related to faculty and staff transitions to retirement, as well as the post-retirement engagement of retirees
.
Please send questions about the survey, report, and HR REAC to Work/Life in Human Resources at

Annual George Peter Memorial
Retiree BBQ
|
|
Over 150 Cornell retirees and guests braved the chilly weather and enjoyed the Annual Cornell Retiree BBQ honoring George Peter on November 16.
Guest of honor, Craig Wiggers, Director of Administration, Department of Physics and retired Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel, welcomed the group, and highlighted the important role that retirees play in our campus community. He also shared some of Cornell's military history, and thanked all the veterans and veteran caregivers who attended.
After some tasty BBQ, retirees wrote cards to soldiers recovering at Walter Reed, played bingo, made holiday centerpieces, and visited the Wortham Military Museum in Barton Hall.
The day was a wonderful way for retirees to reconnect and celebrate!
Thank you to retiree volunteers Paul Bursic, Peggy Andersen, and Hurf Sheldon. Interested in volunteering at future events? Let us know at

Count Feeder Birds for Science
Project FeederWatch
is a winter-long (November-April) survey of birds that visit feeders at backyards, nature centers, community areas, and other locales in North America. Starting in November, your bird counts can help you keep track of what is happening in your own backyard and help scientists track long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance. With FeederWatch, your observations become part of something bigger.
Anyone interested in birds can participate. You can count birds as often as every week, or as infrequently as you like: the schedule is completely flexible. All you need is a bird feeder, bird bath, or plantings that attract birds.

As families gather for the holidays, it is especially important not to forget food safety principles when preparing holiday meals. By following four basic food safety practices, everyone can reduce the risk of food borne illness.
- Keep hands and all food preparation surfaces clean
- Don't cross-contaminate food borne bacteria from one food to another.
- Cook to proper temperatures.
- Refrigerate perishable foods quickly after eating.
These tips are part of the "Fight BAC!" food safety education program to help reduce the incidence of food borne illness.
