A Note From Sam Bennett, CSA President
April 20, 2020

Sea Pines CSA received news from the Heritage Classic Foundation last week that the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing would be played at the Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines without spectators from June 15-21, 2020. Since then, we have started working on the event with the Heritage Classic Foundation including updating our plans and procedures in light of the new date and the challenges created by COVID-19. As we approach the date, we will have more to share with the community on our response to these challenges and changes in our standard tournament procedures.

The Heritage Classic Foundation has asked us to share the following message regarding the status of their plans for the tournament. We are pleased to do so and look forward to working with them as they work to make the Heritage happen this year in Sea Pines.
A Message To the Community From the
Heritage Classic Foundation
Dear Sea Pines Residents,

The Heritage Classic Foundation in conjunction with the PGA TOUR, RBC, Governor McMaster’s office and the Town of Hilton Head recently announced the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing will be conducted from June 18-21 at Harbour Town Golf Links. This year’s event in June will essentially be a made-for-TV event as it will be conducted without spectators and the traditional activities that surround the event.

This has obviously generated many questions and concerns. We need you all to know that first and foremost from ALL stakeholders involved, the well-being of the Sea PInes community remains of utmost importance. We want to be as transparent with our preparation as possible with you. We want you to know that we are working with the PGA TOUR on a number of significant safety measures in an effort to protect all participants and residents of our community.

While we have a framework for the event, we are still in the discovery phase of our planning. We have heard your questions and are working through the plan that will address them all rather than speak to hypotheticals. It will take some time and we ask for your patience. Please keep in mind, we have two months to plan for the event as well as react to the everchanging environment we are all living in. It takes time to plan and be prepared to execute. On the flip side, it takes very little time to halt everything if we are not in a safe place to conduct the event. Having said that, we will be ready to host a world-class event in a safe environment due to an immense amount of planning.

Please bear with us. We will have answers to all your questions in due course once we have developed more clarity.

To reiterate our initial statement on Thursday, this is an incredibly positive step forward for the community, as it gives us a great opportunity to showcase our beautiful region on the Golf Channel and CBS to over 1 billion households worldwide. The tournament is a critical marketing asset to the state of South Carolina, and this will help us get back to a busy, prosperous tourism destination. We want to stress to all of you that we will only conduct the event in a safe environment.

I’d encourage you to read the memo sent from the PGA TOUR at our request regarding the RBC Heritage (below).

Thank you for your patience and we will be back in touch soon.

Memo from the PGA TOUR

The safety and well-being for all involved with the RBC Heritage, the community of Hilton Head Island and the State of South Carolina is and will continue to be the No. 1 priority for the PGA TOUR.

Our announcement on April 16 regarding the revamped PGA TOUR schedule – which included moving the RBC Heritage to the week of June 15-21 -- was a critical step in putting our tournaments in a position to return to competition.

As we prepare for the return of competition, we’ve taken an unprecedented measure in terms of health and safety by announcing that the first four returning events – including the RBC Heritage – will be conducted without the general public. We will continue to work with tournament officials and leading medical experts to put the proper health protocols in place including but not limited to testing, social distancing, strict hygienic measures and essential personnel only on-site.

We have been and will continue to be responsible, thoughtful and transparent with our decision process. As we’ve said on several occasions, we will resume competition only when – working closely with our tournaments, partners and communities – it is considered safe to do so under the guidance of the leading public health authorities.
