Saying goodbye for the summer at the start of last Wednesday's farewell video.
It is still hard to believe that last Wednesday the school year came to a close. This year has truly been something unique as we opened by rolling out our new Skyward student information system and wrapped up distance learning through a national health pandemic. But we made it and a well earned summer break is now officially underway!

In this week's edition I would like to extend a huge thank you to our incredible educators who worked so very hard on a daily basis to guide our students and help them learn and grow. Of course, they were backed up this year by some pretty terrific support staff and truly caring administrators!

I would also like to thank our PTSA board, SAC committee, local business partners, and our parent volunteers for the hours of dedication and/or economic support to help enrich our middle school and build a sense of community for our Knights. And to all our Lake Nona parents, I would like to say thank you for trusting us with your children, and for your investment and support to provide a quality education for our students.

We plan to run a few issues of The Kingdom's Chronicle over the summer, but please remember to visit our website and social media pages all along.

With Knight Pride,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal
Lake Nona Middle School

Corrections & Amplifications

The names of the two OCPS Transportation Services workers who were of great help to our teachers at the end of the 4th quarter were accidentally left out last week. Michael Dungla and Tala Faematala were assigned to Lake Nona Middle School in support of end of year procedures and events. They assisted teachers in packing, moving classrooms, removing trash, and preparing and participating in distributing and collecting end of year items. Thank you Mr. Dungla and Mr. Faematala!

Summer Meal Service Begins Monday

Grab-and-Go meals from OCPS will become "Summer Meal Service" starting Monday, June 1st with new locations, distribution days and meals. Grab-and-Go meals will continue to be offered at numerous community sites.

National Junior Honor Society
Congratulations! Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a middle school student. The LNMS chapter of NJHS has worked hard to bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of parents, teachers, peers, and the community.

This chapter strives to give practical meaning to the Society's standards of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These four ideals have been considered as the basis for the new inductees selection. No student is inducted simply because of a high academic average. The National Junior Honor Society strives to recognize the total student - one who excels in all of these areas.

Thank you to the NJHS sponsors Mr Burghdurf and Ms Durkin.

If you go to the 6:52 minute mark in the NJHS video, Ms. Durkin reads off the names of our newest members for the community. Thank you to all of the NJHS members that participated (only two students pictured herein due to space - please see video).

Congratulations Mrs. Herold!

Assistant Principal Lindsey Herold is to be congratulated on her new position as the Associate Director of Guidance at the Master's Academy in Oviedo, Florida! It is an honor to write this tribute about Mrs. Lindsey Herold - a friend, colleague, teacher, scholar, educational administrator, wife, mother, and daughter. In whatever role we know her, from whatever vantage point, she stands apart as someone special!

The administrator in Mrs. Herold always greeted the students every morning in the foyer of the school with a quick dress code check and pleasant good morning. She knew how important it was to be visible and diplomatic to help students to be successful that day. Mrs. Herold had a playful side by wearing a superhero or Knight spirit tee shirt with gold glitter tennis shoes, or an evening dress for a formal dance to support school activities. The teachers appreciated her attention to details, strong organizational skills and for being the go-to person for understanding technology tools such as Canvas, Skyward and my favorite tool during virtual meetings, ZOOM.

Mrs. Herold introduced to our early morning gatherings healthy green smoothies with chopped kale from her home garden. Farmer Herold used the garden to engage her own children in the importance of growing healthy foods. She was always on board for new ideas to help students learn and feel special at LNMS. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 coronavirus cut our time short and focused us on virtual learning during the last quarter of the year. Mrs. Herold was a great asset to LNMS and we will miss her.

Good luck with your new job Mrs. Herold.

Authored by Ms. Cheryl Wood on behalf of the LNMS Knight Family

"Great school leaders constantly pay attention. They build a culture built on student learning. They confront mediocre teaching. They invite. They inspire. They support families, students, and school staff in ways that lead to improvement. They want to be trusted, not simply liked."

Summer Reading
LNMS Recommends that ALL students participate in summer reading activities sponsored by OCPS, OCLS, and LNMS! The OCPS programs run now through August 10th.

*** Beanstack App on Launchpad - Track your reading and win prizes! The Orange County Public Library is offering prizes as well. Students can win a Kindle through OCPS. LNMS will also be offering prizes randomly for usage of Beanstack.  It's easy - all you have to do is track the number of minutes you read throughout the summer!

*** Even though you cannot come to the LNMS Media Center in person this summer, you can request books from Ms. Powers! On the dates listed below, Ms. Powers will be working in the media center getting ready for next school year. All you need to do is email her the name of the book to books you want to read and which time during the day you prefer, and she will check the book out to you and leave it in the front office. You just need to come pick it up!
  • June 16, 17, 23, and 24
  • July 7, 8, 14, and 15
Pickup will occur in the front office from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. You must email first to request the book and also receive confirmation back that is ready for pickup in the front office.

Monday's Motivational Moment!
Three Secrets of Success

The great oil man, H.L. Hunt, who at one time was the richest self-made billionaire in the world, was once asked by a television journalist for his "secret of success." This was his answer:

There are only three requirements for success. First, decide exactly what you want in life. Second, determine the price that you are going to have to pay to get the things you want. And third, and this is most important, resolve to pay that price."

The lesson for our Knights? Most people want to do well in school, be in good shape, and have nice things. Of course, these are not the only ways to measure success as helping others, developing your natural talents to their maximum potential, or getting involved in community service are also wonderful success goals. But whatever the success measurement might be, most people are not willing to pay the price in time and effort to get there. To be successful you must be willing to pay the full price, do not hold back, and practice self discipline to achieve your goals. Make no excuses and remember this simple phrase . . . "If it's to be, it's up to me!"

I hope your June gets off to great start on Monday! Don't forget to do some reading for pleasure this week Knights!
