Kodiak ROAR, April 16, 2020
Tenth grader Philipp W., center, attended CSS this year as an international student from Germany. His experience was cut short when he returned home this month because of the global pandemic. "How do you leave behind a second life? How do you walk away from the community you've become so attached to, the experience that you love - one which brought you untold tears and unspeakable joys - a school where you found friends, along with teachers who encouraged you to think further than ever before? I'm new to this, so please forgive me. CSS, I'm saying goodbye." Read Philipp's full letter here.

e-Learning Snapshots of Two Upper School Students
Libby W. '23 engages in a hands-on learning science project at home for Ms. Hanson's class. She is planting wheat grass seeds in five different pots and putting a different amount of worms in each pot to see if it affects the growth of the grass. She measures the grass daily once it sprouts and logs it. She's done the same experiment before and is doing it again to verify her results.

Luke T. '20 enjoys Mr. Moorhead's band class at home from the nearly-finished garage at his family's home. "Mr. Mo makes it more fun, engaging and worthwhile than I ever expected! Normal school Band is fun," Luke said. "He even makes e-Learning band a blast!"
NHS Students Available to Support e-Learning
The National Honor Society has scholars that are available to support you and/or your child with e-Learning. We will adhere to all safety restrictions at this time. What is your role at CSS?
I am a first grade teacher.

What is one thing you've learned from students? I've learned tons of things from my students, but the most important thing is to slow down and listen. Kids have great ideas and think in ways adults rarely consider, so there's a lot you can learn from them if you do.

If you were a superhero, what powers would you have? I would have super speed. That way, I'd be able to work with my first graders even more each day!

What did you want to be growing up? I wanted to be a first grade teacher. I got very lucky.

What is one thing you enjoy about CSS? I love the way CSS encourages students and teachers alike to reach for their potential. CSS opens countless opportunities for people to try new things and explore the world around them.
Faces of CSS: Brent Moorhead
What is your role at CSS? I am the Instrumental Music teacher and Band Director for grades 4-12. I also teach Upper School Music Theory, direct the Pep Band, and coach the Upper School Garage Band, Holiday Winds, and various other small ensembles.

What is one thing you've learned from students? I've learned that goosebump moments aren't restricted to professional recordings, performances, or paintings. Our CSS musicians, actors, and artists create some incredible moments that touch my heart and inspire me to be better at what I do. Our students create moments that will raise the hair on your arms, cause you to believe that they actually are the character they are  portraying, or help you to experience colors (or other visuals) in a whole new way.

If you were a superhero, what powers would you have? I am a HUGE fan of the superheroes that have gadgets like Batman or the Green Arrow. Give me a utility belt full of cool devices or some arrows with a sweet bow, then add a neat costume, and I would be good to go! If I had to choose a superpower, I would love to have Spiderman's ability to stick to things, paired with his super strength!

What is one thing you enjoy about CSS? I love how we think outside of the box and encourage risk-taking while exploring the possibilities of experiential education within every discipline.

What did you want to be growing up? I don't know that I ever decided that I officially wanted to be a cowboy or the character from a favorite TV show - although I'm sure there are pictures and stories somewhere that suggest otherwise - but I always did want to follow my mom and dad around and learn how to do things that interested them. At one time my dad was a carpenter, and I would build things in the garage using his tools and scraps of wood. I would also go out on jobs and help him paint or do various other tasks. I did the same with my mom, following her around the kitchen and wanting to help her bake or visiting her at work when she was an RN in the ICU at the hospital. I wanted to be like them!

What is a favorite memory at CSS? I met my wife, Stacy, at the school, and we worked together for several years, so getting married at CSS was an amazing experience. The ceremony was outside on the Terrace of the Trianon in late October 2014. It was a beautiful 80-degree day with Colorado blue skies and the fall colors all around us. I remember looking over near the entrance to the gym and seeing two of my Upper School Band students watching our ceremony. There were regional volleyball games going on in the Field House that weekend, so our girls team ran out to give us hugs in-between games. I also remember a team from another school sitting under a tree on the quad, and cheering for us when the pastor finally said "you may now kiss the bride." Such a magical moment at CSS!

Alumna Requests Bed Sheet Donations for Nursing Facilities
Alumna Amber McClish-Strover '04 has reached out to the CSS community to request donations of bed sheets to help with shortages of personal protection equipment (PPE). Amber is Director of Admissions at Life Care Center of Colorado Springs, which operates nursing care centers. They are currently in "outbreak mode" because they have active COVID-19 cases.

Life Care Center is collecting full size and larger bed sheets, both fitted and top sheets, that will be sewn into gowns that can be washed as a way to help combat the shortage of PPEs. All color/pattern sheets are welcome, but please no sheets with holes.

CSS families that are picking up e-Gala dinners from Maytag on Saturday, April 18, may drop off donations during that time. You may also donate bed sheets directly to Life Care Center, 2490 International Circle, Colorado Springs, CO 80910. If you are a sewer, they could use your help turning sheets into gowns. Please contact Ann Petit at [email protected] if you would like to help.

Kodiak Joins Model UN Students Worldwide to Create #stayathome Video
Madeline K. '21 joined a virtual crew of Model United Nation students worldwide to create a video that encourages people to stay at home to slow the spread of COVID-19. Madeline appears about 26 into the video. The students met in person in January as they gathered in Geneva, Switzerland, for the FerMUN Conference. Click here to check out the video.

An ECS Video Reflection
This week, Upper School students would have formally presented what they learned on their Experience-Centered Seminars in March, which were cut short by the global pandemic. We are sharing an individual reflection video created by Sasha M. '22 on her ECS trip to Spain. Sasha and other students on the Espana ECS spent a number of their days in Granada living with local families. They sought to answer these essential questions: What was the influence of the Moorish culture in Spanish architecture, language and culture? How is the Moorish heritage still present in Spain?

"For the past few years I've really loved documenting my experiences when I travel, and this year I decided to do the same with my ECS to Spain," Sasha said. "I tried to include my favorite parts of this adventure in the video which was hard to narrow down into a few minutes. Although this ECS was cut short, I think I had the opportunity to experience everything I was looking forward to learning about Spain plus more, and I had an amazing time!"
