Students Complete Clinic Challenge Experience

The Clinic Challenge Experience (CCX) is designed to help students make a successful transition from classroom to chiropractic internship by sharpening their professional focus, energizing their passion for chiropractic and exposing them to success principles for practice. The ropes course on Sherman’s campus consists of a variety of challenges — using ropes, pulleys, walls, platforms, poles — all of which present students with the opportunity to use problem-solving skills and teamwork. Facilitators and teammates encourage participants to face and overcome whatever fears are blocking their ability to accomplish the tasks. Check out the photos.
Interns Join Chiropractic Health Center

Thirty-three interns are now ready to serve the community and see patients at the Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center, a teaching clinic for senior students in their final stage of internship prior to graduation from the doctor of chiropractic program.
 
Interns celebrated the entrance of this final phase of their chiropractic education recently during a pinning ceremony on the Sherman College campus, located at 2020 Springfield Road in Spartanburg. This was the first pinning ceremony to be held in the newly constructed Gelardi Student Center, and the college streamed the event live on Facebook so interns’ family and friends could watch from afar.
 
Local High School, College Students Visit Anatomy Lab
 
Sherman College’s anatomy lab was the highlight of a recent visit from about 65 students from Swofford Career Center and North Greenville University; the groups visited campus to tour the college’s anatomy lab. Provost Bob Irwin, D.C., and Dean of Clinical Sciences Armand Rossi, D.C., welcomed the students and talked with them about chiropractic.

Anatomy Lab Manager Edgardo Rivera, M.D., with the help of students Ronald Critz, Ezequiel Maldonado, Rebeka Drum, Orlando Figueroa, Jason Shull, Terence Hoff, Nicholas Mueller, James Eldridge, Christopher Demczar, Amanda Cruz, Jennifer Lee and Clifford Morrow, presented five prosected cadavers to the visitors. Our Sherman students demonstrated knowledge, leadership and commitment and were vital in making sure each group could observe and discuss human anatomy. “This was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved,” Rivera said of the visit.

$10,000 Harris Foundation Grant Supports Business Success
 
Seeking to help prepare chiropractic students for success in practice, the William M. Harris Family Foundation has granted Sherman College $10,000 in support of its Graduation Plus 10 (G10) Program. The grant will be used to cover associated costs that afford G10 the resources and tools required for successful program execution.

Established in 1981, the William M. Harris Family Foundation promotes chiropractic education and research through grants to various chiropractic colleges and educational organizations. Harris was widely known for his philanthropy and for his financial investment in chiropractic education and research.

G10 is an innovative program that starts in the first quarter to give Sherman College students intensive training on how to be chiropractic entrepreneurs.

This powerful partnership with TLC Coaching is designed to help students explore the practical aspects of establishing and growing their practices, along with providing a game plan for eliminating student loan debt within the first 10 years after graduation.
College Magazine Unveils
New Name, New Look

Excellence. Student Success. Innovation. Professionalism. Integrity. These values represent the future of Sherman College of Chiropractic.
 
Phrases like “transformational change” and “preeminent chiropractic college” aren’t simply buzzwords for us here at Sherman College. They truly describe what’s happening on campus. Like any good chiropractic analogy, our changes are taking place from the inside out.

With all the progress happening on our physical campus and in our curriculum, what better time to update one of the college’s key communication pieces – its alumni magazine? Our new design will make its debut at Lyceum and will be mailed in early May. If you aren’t on our mailing list but would like to receive our EXCEL magazine, email pthomas@sherman.edu. Campaign to Focus on Student Success, Practice Readiness

The college’s “I’m READY” project, to be unveiled at Lyceum 2019, will both highlight and address the areas of opportunity to align the mission of Sherman College with the success of its students and employees. This campaign will feature ways to invest fiscal, educational and capital resources to serve to the many needs that students will encounter along their journeys into the profession of chiropractic. With the positive response to our Obsessed with Student Success (OWSS) initiative and our recent Obsessed with Employee Success (OWES) launch, this campaign serves as a vehicle for momentum. Labryrinth Added to Campus
 
Sherman College has recently added a labyrinth to campus near the side of the Scallon Building, where on clear days, you can see the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. Labyrinths offer a way of addressing the spiritual, emotional, and psychological aspects of healing. Walking a labyrinth often brings mindfulness, insight and peace. Though similar in appearance to a maze, the labyrinth leads to the center and back out the same way, with no wrong turns, and no dead ends. While the designs vary, all labyrinths have a single path leading to a center; our center features the Sherman College logo as a reminder of chiropractic philosophy. 
Campus Celebrates
National Library Workers Day
 
Students recently celebrated National Library Workers Day earlier this month by signing a card to show their appreciation for Director of Learning Resources Chandra Placer, M.L.I.S., and Assistant Director of Learning Resources Patricia Calhoun, B.S.
 
The Office of Student Affairs spearheaded the effort. “We recognize that Pat and Chandra work hard to serve our students by providing valuable resources and a quiet place to study and work,” said Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Michelle Schutrumpf. “They are awesome!”
Student Ambassadors Celebrate a Night with the Gelardis
 
The Sherman College Student Ambassadors joined together in the Gelardi Student Center to celebrate another successful quarter during a catered dinner. Ambassadors were surprised with special guests Thom and Betty Gelardi, D.C.s, who shared personal stories of their lives and chiropractic journeys and were open to the Ambassadors’ questions.
 
During the evening, students were recognized and awarded for their outstanding work during the quarter. Robyn Kirby received the Showcase VIP Award, Charmi Patel received the Ambassador of the Quarter Award, and Angelica Lopez received the Officer of the Quarter Award. Lopez was also recognized for outstanding service among her peers.
 
The group also heard from fellow Ambassadors Tyler Speed, Terrance Hoff and Zach Shaw as they shared their mission trip experiences. Thank you, Ambassadors, for proudly representing Sherman College in all that you do.
Last Call: IRAPS Abstracts Due May 1

Sherman College of Chiropractic is now accepting abstracts for its 16th annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium (IRAPS), to be held October 12-13, on the Sherman College campus in Spartanburg, SC. Continuing education credit will be available; details will be released after speakers have been selected.
 
Abstracts must be submitted by May 1, 2019, and should take the form of short papers having approximately 300 words. References are expected. Each submission undergoes a peer-reviewed process. Find out more about IRAPS and view the detailed Call for Submissions.
Online CE with Matthew McCoy

The Continuing Education Department of Sherman College is pleased to announce its newest online CE course from Dr. Matthew McCoy.

In this 3-hour course, you will explore recent autism and chiropractic care research and learn more about managing the risks of working with children in your office.

Students, Faculty Attend Memorial Service for Donors

Sherman College representatives recently helped honor the individuals and families of those who donated their bodies to science during the previous year as they attended a service of commemoration on April 12 hosted by the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, which supplies Sherman College’s lab with donor bodies.
 
Anatomy Lab Manager Edgardo Rivera, M.D., faculty member Terry E. Lancaster, M.S., and student Rebekah Drum represented Sherman College at the annual event attended by the donors’ relatives, friends and supporters. Drum was selected to speak at the event, and her speech was published in the event program. Read more on our blog.
ACP Underway in Chile

This great group of chiropractors finished its second module of the Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers program March 30-31 in Santiago, Chile.

The ACP is a one-year course designed to enhance the understanding, depth, and breadth of chiropractic philosophy. Sessions challenge the thinking process and the application of philosophy in the chiropractic profession. Successful completion of the 100-hour program leads to membership in the prestigious Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers, and the ICA Council on Philosophical Chiropractic Standards accepts the successful completion of the ACP for 100 hours toward its Diplomate in Philosophical Chiropractic Standards.

Helping Students Combat Stress
 
The Office of Student Affairs recently hosted a Hot Tea Bar to help students de-stress and enjoy a few moments of tranquility. Sherman students often juggle heavy class loads, busy home lives, tight budgets and more. Recognizing the need to help students reduce their stress and anxiety, the college offers several activities each quarter that focus on improving mental health.
ROARing at Toms River High School
 
Joe Sasso, D.C., ’83, and Daria Messina, D.C., ’87, of Toms River, NJ, proudly represented Sherman College recently at the Toms River High School East Career Day. The couple have just joined the college’s Reach Out And Recruit (ROAR) program designed to mentor and inspire the next generation of chiropractors. “Who knows,” Sasso said of the event, “we may have created a spark in some future chiropractors!”
Browning Earns Diplomate in Chiropractic Craniocervical Junction Procedures

Assistant Professor Jaime Browning, D.C., ’09, DCCJP, has completed and passed the rigorous Upper Cervical Diplomate in Chiropractic Craniocervical Junction Procedures, a program designed for upper cervical doctors of chiropractic who wish to advance their diagnostic, analytical and clinical skills and help improve patient outcomes. The program includes 300+ hours of classroom instruction and takes two and a half years to complete.
Kent Published in Archives of Neurology & Neuroscience
 
Director of Evidence-Informed Curriculum and Practice Christopher Kent, D.C., J.D., has recently had his work published. His paper, “Proposed Neurobiological Processes Associated with Models of Vertebral Subluxation: Dysafferentation, Dyskinesia, Dysponesis, Dysautonomia, Neuroplasticity and Ephaptic Transmission,” has been accepted and published in Archives in Neurology & Neuroscience, Volume 3, Issue 1, April 4, 2019. Receive National Recognition
 
Five of Sherman College’s key marketing and communications projects have been recognized at the national level, taking home second, third and honorable mention prizes in the National Federation of Press Women Communications Contest. Before advancing to the national contest, the entries won top honors in Media Women of South Carolina’s statewide contest.
 
Two entries earned second place in the nation, including the college’s enewsletter, Sherman Shares , and a speech written for the American Black Chiropractic Association annual conference. The college’s alumni magazine took home third place for page design. Receiving honorable mentions were a personality profile article on the late Eric Bourg and a print ad for the college’s Chiropractic Health Center. Director of Public Relations Karen Brower Rhodes, M.B.A., produced these communications in 2018 as part of initiatives spearheaded by the Office of Institutional Advancement and Public Relations. Health Center Names Intern of the Month

The Chiropractic Health Center faculty recognize an intern each month who excels in clinical performance, patient management, professionalism, and analytical and adjusting technique. The March 2019 Intern of the Month is Heather Griewank, a thirteenth-quarter student from Plymouth, IN. She graduates in September and plans to associate with Anneka Parks, D.C., ’09, at Country Chiropractic Center in Bremen, IN.
