First Gen, Latina Entrepreneur, Googler, and Servant Leader - Meet Sixcia Devine


Sixcia, what is your personal narrative? What key moments in your life led you to where you are?

My name tells the story of how it all started. In the 1970’s My parents immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic because my mother could not have children. My mother went through six procedures and waited six years to have a baby. Finally, my mother's dream came true and I was born in a year that ended with the number six. Since the number six was constant in my mother's journey to have children, my grandfather came up with my name. He spelled out the number six on a napkin and added the letters CIA, the acronym for the Central Intelligence Agency. I was so secretive he thought that was fitting. He added Six + CIA and created SIXCIA. My mother loved the creativity of the made up name and decided to go with it. Keeping the tradition of the number six - below are six turning points that illustrate my life story. 

Turning Point #1 - Educational Inequality

I was raised in the city of Providence and attended public schools in my adolescent years. School was a rollercoaster of events. Every week there was some kind of fight, shooting, someone getting pregnant or passing away. We had great teachers that shared details about after school programs like Upward Bound, other summer programs, and extra activities to help us academically. I would not change my academic experience if I had a choice. I learned that the tools to move forward in life are accessible but may be harder to reach because of economic circumstances. 

The key turning point was when I started my freshman year of college and discovered that I was so behind on my academics compared to the rest of the other students. I was upset by that reality. There was no blame towards my public school educational journey but rather a realization that there were educational disparities. As a result of this, I learned how to simplify the learning process by understanding what goals I needed to achieve in the classroom. I found the solution at the library and understood what I needed to succeed. I also joined the argument and debate team at my school which taught me how to articulate my thoughts in speech and communication.

Turning Point #2 - Travel opened my view of the world

I studied abroad in Granada, Spain my sophomore year of college. I lived with a family who hosted four other women from different parts of Spain. I was the only person from America with Caribbean roots. Sharing ideas, beliefs and plans about politics, education, art, culture, and social identity with confident women who had strong voices helped me to create a more secure outlook on myself as a woman and as a citizen of the world. 

Turning Point # 3 - Connecting with change makers 

When I graduated college I landed a job at John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. I worked in the development office where I helped to organize major fundraising events for scholars, scholarships, and leaders from all over the world that were advocating for political and social change. I was consumed with listening and learning about what these world leaders thought and how they took action. I learned that inequalities and injustices exist all over the world and at all levels. I learned that change happens when good storytelling paired with great listening leads to action. Leaders have substantial force because of their persuasion and communication skills which helps inspire others to follow, believe, and move towards change.   

Turning Point #4 - Helping others to start businesses

After working at Kennedy School of Government I started an MBA program in Paris, France which I never finished. There I discovered that I wanted to start my own business but wasn’t being taught the skills I needed to start an enterprise. After that realization I returned to the US and launched a language immersion business for professionals. During that venture I decided that I needed to learn from other small businesses and entrepreneurs. I started working at an organization that helps women get access to capital and start businesses. I began to learn how to help others start businesses while growing my own business. As I was teaching I was also learning from my clients. It was a life changing experience to help women transform their dreams into a reality by helping write business plans and push them forward to take action on plans. Growing the local economy and helping others in their pursuit of becoming business owners was important to the community, economy and their families.   

Turning Point #5 - Servant Leadership + Service to Others

In 2010 I left a position at a university where I was running an entrepreneurship center in Rhode Island and started a boutique marketing business (private business) and launched Caritas Smile (non-profit) without having one client or any donations for the non-profit. 

In both businesses I use the philosophy of servant-leadership. “A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. While traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid,” servant leadership is different. The servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible”. Source Site. Servant-leadership has helped me to understand how to educate, market to groups, help and engage with communities. 

Turning Point #6 - Using art to heal

During Covid in 2020 I started painting on canvas and tables. I needed an outlet and I began to use all types of metallic acrylic colors. I discovered fluid painting techniques to create wall art and table art. For me it’s meditative, refreshing and gives me the opportunity to tune into another part of my existence. When I paint I listen to Spanish music. Typically merengue, salsa, and bachata that include artists: Juan Luis Guerra, La India, Hector Acosta, and Marc Anthony. I recently launched an Instagram art page. A percentage of proceeds go towards Caritas Smile - helping communities live sustainable lives in Latin America.
 

What barriers have you faced as a Latina woman rising in the business world? 

At times I have had to speak louder and with a spark of force while still maintaining my professionalism so that I can be heard and my points are recognized. Also, I have discovered that many Latino leaders are not as supportive of each other due to the competitive state of mind in the corporate world. When I was employed by a university, I recall that I needed flex time so that I could pick up my son from school since I was a newly single mom. The new director of the department, a Latina female, who also had a child the same age as mine, was not supportive. Ironically, she lasted five months in that position and the department was shut down after my departure. Needless to say, I made the right choice to leave and start my business instead of staying in that employee role. As new leaders begin to enter the workforce, it’s essential to create a supportive culture in the workplace that includes flexibility with time schedules. 


What advice would you give to the next generation of Inclusive Inspirational Leaders?

Offer to give guidance and service whenever the opportunity arises. Former president John F. Kennedy said “we rise by lifting others”. Taking action on our words is more important than reading them. My grandmother would tell me “La vida va a ser muy difícil con muchos obstáculos, pero nada es imposible”. Life is going to be very difficult with major roadblocks but nothing is impossible. Be reminded daily that life is precious and short. Take time to travel. Learn something new everyday. And give whenever and wherever you can.

Student Leaders Speak 2021 Report Finds Shift to Remote Learning Hardest on BIPOC College Students

Diverse students felt they did not have a seat at the table when pandemic related decisions were made and call on college leaders to include them. The report is a joint initiative between Every Learner Everywhere and GlobalMindED with support from The Equity Project LLC


(DENVER, CO – May 6, 2021) — A new report based on data-driven surveys of 25 GlobalMindED Ambassadors representing a larger group of 102 students from 47 colleges in 22 states found that without exception, the shift from on campus learning to remote college instruction has most negatively impacted poverty-affected, first generation, Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students. Their voices are shared in the report, which concludes that college presidents, CEO’s and government leaders cannot solve problems for these students without including them at the table.

Student Leaders Speak 2021: Student Voices Informing Educational Strategies, conducted via surveys, interviews and informal feedback from mentors, illustrates a lack of national and collegiate preparedness to address the near-immediate shift from in-classroom to remote learning. Students reported a lack of access to an engaged faculty and essential technology while underscoring that their greatest support and strength has come from interaction and collaboration within their dedicated student community. Highlights include:

  • Communities represented included BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), first generation, living with disabilities, white poverty-affected, LGBTQ+, Veteran, Online, and ESL/Immigrant.

  • 100 percent acknowledged two or more barriers such as lack of internet access, lack of focused learning environment, no personal device, health concerns, unemployment, language barriers, learning from their beds/bedrooms and/or managing younger siblings.

  • 100 percent described absent or unavailable campus support systems beyond the instructor, equating the learning experience and cost of same as being grossly out of alignment.

  • 80 percent disapproved of the online learning experience, citing inconsistency in faculty ability to educate using technological tools and practices. In essence, the virtual environment was not mirroring or upholding the most important elements of the in-person environment, as some faculty were not adequately trained in the COVID-caused emotional/social needs of students.

  • 70 percent relied on peer support as compared to more formal support systems. Students were learning and growing by being together – something critical to note during times of both social and physical distancing.

The report calls on college administrators to implement actionable steps to ease the challenging demands of remote learning and smooth the transition from college to professional careers.

  • Colleges should do a better job of providing a platform for the voices of poverty-affected and first generation students to be heard.

  • Faculty needs to gain a better grasp of digital tools, technologies and strategies.

  • Advisors should recruit student coaches and peers to help newer students from diverse communities.

  • Policy makers must improve access to transportation, housing, child care, financing, lower tuition/debt and career opportunities for first generation/diverse students.
