Avraham Avinu lived a spiritually meaningful life. He certainly had his challenges and his ten tests, but he is the father of our people. Success always comes with sacrifice and setbacks. I think it is fair to say that despite Avraham's legacy setting that we read about during these weeks, we do find that his personal family life was troubling to stay the least.
After the Akeidah, Avraham returns alone - without Yitzchak. Soon after, we learn that Sarah Imeinu has died and that he was not there at the time. In fact, once the burial of Sarah is completed, we hear very little of Avraham in the Torah narrative even though he lives for many years after.
Rav Soloveitchik Z"L writes that Avraham could only be Avraham Avinu as long as he had a partner in Sarah Imeinu. Once she was gone, his "Career" (as it were) was in essence over.
We all try to create legacy and meaning in our lives. We have to make certain that we appreciate and recognize all those who make it possible for us to accomplish those goals. Don't forget to tell them before it's too late.
