AP EXAM REGISTRATION WILL BEGIN MONDAY JANUARY 28TH!
Washburn will again be offering online registration for AP exams starting January 28th and running through February 25th, 2019. You will charged $55 per exam, and registrations completed after February 18th will incur a $5 late fee per exam for a total of $60. Fees will be waived for students eligible for free/reduced lunch, as well as those with immediate family in ACTIVE military. There are a small number of scholarships available for those that do not met that criteria.  Please check with Mr. Percy for details.

AP Calculus on May 24th

ACT-For-All
All juniors will be automatically registered for the ACT-for-All on April 24, 2019.  This test is free of charge and includes all four multiple choice sections and the writing test.  Students will receive more information about the test via their English teachers, counselors, the Google Slideshow announcements, and the Washburn Weekly Webcast.  There will be NO makeup days available to students for this free test administration.  

ACT National Dates
There are also National Saturday ACT testing dates during the Spring 2019.  Students will need to register for these dates independently and there is a fee associated with them.  If students have questions about this test and the registration process, it is recommended they go to the CCC or to their Counselor.  

The dates for the Saturday test are as follows:
February 9 -- Register by January 11 (test at Washburn)
April 13 -- Register by March 8
June 8 -- Register by May 3
July 13 -- Register by June 14

ACT Workshops
Tara Mennitt periodically runs ACT (Writing) Workshops before the ACT tests.  There will be 2 workshops before the February 9 test date:

2019-2020 Course Selection Starts Next Week
Last Wednesday, all 9th-11th grade students learned about course choice for next year on Course Information Day. Beginning on the first day of the new quarter and extending for six weeks, the counselors will meet with every student individually to review transcripts, plan for the coming year(s), and make course selections. COLLEGE PLANNING TIPS
Learn from a national expert the insider tips that will greatly enhance your understanding of the college process, reduce anxiety and position your child for success. Avoid mistakes when trying to identify colleges that are the right fit, a behind-the-scenes view of how financial aid really works and tips for working with your teenager on a stressful and emotional process. Classes will be held at Washburn on Wednesday, February 13th  from 7-8pm. PARENTS LEARN HOW TO CONDUCT A FINANCIALLY AWARE COLLEGE SEARCH
Parents of college-bound students will get help researching and identifying schools that might be a good financial match for their family. Instead of relying on general, broad examples, attendees will learn specifics about the financial aid practices of the schools on their students' personal list of prospective colleges. The first meeting, for parents only, will focus on conventional wisdom and best practices around financing a college education. The second meeting will focus on how colleges make decisions around financial aid and how to find the best options for your family. Students may come the second night of class if they wish. WRITING YOUR COLLEGE ESSAY 101
While GPAs and ACT/SAT scores are key components of a college application, the essay offers you an important opportunity to tell your story beyond the numbers. It's a chance to speak directly to the admissions committee about unique aspects of your character. A successful essay can help you stand out in a pool of similar candidates and potentially tip the scales in your favor. During this 90-minute class, you will hear what college admissions officers are looking for in an essay, learn tips about how to approach each Common Application essay prompt, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of some sample essays, and leave feeling confident about writing your own essay. Offered in partnership with WriteNow! ( www.WriteNowMN.org). Classes will be held at Washburn on Monday, February 25th or Tuesday, March 12 from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. Cost is $19. ACT Preparation Course
Prepare for the ACT College entrance exam by learning test-taking strategies and the structure of the exam. Focus on mathematics, reading comprehension, principles of grammar and science reasoning. Each course meets for twelve hours and is offered in cooperation with Advantage Educational Programs. Classes will be held at Washburn on Tuesday, March 12th, Tuesday, March 19th, Tuesday,
April 16th and Tuesday, April 23rd from 5:30pm to 8:30pm Cost is $125  ($80 for students on Free/Reduced Lunch) . Please register  online or call Washburn Community Education at 612-668-3450.
BILINGUAL SEAL             
 
Students in grade 10 or above who read, write and speak in another language can test to earn up to 4 semesters of college credit Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. The first Bilingual Seal testing session is coming up on Saturday, February 2 at the Davis Center at 8:30am. Tests available in Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Hindi, Italian, and Portuguese. 

The deadline to register for February 2 testing session is noon on Thursday, January 31. Register TODAY at bit.ly/sealregister. The remaining testing dates are: 

February 2nd at 8:30am at Davis Center 
February 23rd at 1:00 PM at Wellstone High School
March 23rd at 8:30 AM at Wellstone High School

Attention Parents of 2019 Graduates -- Vaccination Recommendations
The CDC vaccine recommendations for older teens (16-18yo) are a Meningitis booster and a Tdap booster prior to graduation. Now is also a good time to ensure their HPV vaccination series is complete! Washburn School Based clinic offers these vaccines at no cost for families that qualify through Native American ancestry and for families with medical assistance or no insurance.
