Acceleration East High School
Community Brief
 Tuesday, April 23, 2019

Are your kids in a "good place" socially and emotionally? This isn't an invitation to probe into their lives, but how well do you know how your kid is doing right now? Overall, things may seem well and good. But, if your kid is moving on to college or a career next year, maybe out of the area, have you had some honest conversations about the stress of leaving the house for the first time? Focus less on projecting your parental stress into your student. Your kid already knows you will miss them. But have they heard the statements of confidence you have in them to be successful in their next step in life? That's what they need, to reduce their hidden stress and apprehension, so they can move on with confidence.

What does that mean for kids and parents not graduating but coming back to high school? Spend the balance of this year focusing your conversations around what these remaining five weeks of school mean in the larger picture. Every Major League Baseball team plays 162 regular season games or 54 3-game series. You want to focus on taking 2 out of 3 in each series. That'll make you elite.

Enjoy the rest of your week and our beautiful Florida spring weather while we have it!

With Phoenix Pride,

Ongoing Professional Development
Meet the DPLC team at Acceleration East High School. The continuing education of our teachers remains one of our highest priorities!
OCPS has been executing a District-Wide Professional Learning Community (DPLC) initiative all year. The individual school sites throughout the county have their own "DPLC teams" that coordinate with OCPS to roll-out important educational processes/strategies.

As an example, one area of focus essential for all teachers and their students has been success with "close reading strategies" which can be applied across many subject areas including math, science, art and so forth. Below we have included some recent pictures of Acceleration East's dedicated DPLC team plus a diagram pf how the DPLC system flows from the county level down into the classrooms.

Principal Loftus with team members Annie Naffziger, Alka Singh and Pete Roberts who, every school day, are also excellent classroom teachers in mathematics, biology, and history! We greatly appreciate the extra time they have invested as members of our school's DPLC team during 2018-2019.

Staff Recognition
Meet Mr. Diaz, AEHS Technology Support Representative

Mr. Richard Diaz has been a tremendous asset to our high school since his arrival with all things "tech related" to help the students and staff. In fact, in 2017 he was voted Acceleration East's Support Person of the Year.

Always ready to help, here Mr. Diaz was leading a presentation at a past Digital Open House

This Week's Motivational Moment!
A SINGLE ROSE FOR HER MOTHER

A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away.

As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb sobbing.

He asked her what was wrong and she replied, "I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother, but I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars."

The man smiled and said, "Come on in with me. I'll buy you a rose."

He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother's flowers.

As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home.

She said, "Yes, please! You can take me to my mother."

She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave.

The man returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother's house immediately.

The lesson plus a reminder. Mother's Day 2019 is May 12th, just 18 days from today. But please remember, spend as much time as you can loving and caring people who love you. Enjoy each moment with them before it's too late. There is nothing important than family.

Have a great week!
