Urgent Letter to a U.S. Senator
Yesterday, I sent the following letter to a U.S. Senator. Full disclosure, I worked with him for almost a decade at an engineering consulting firm in the seventies.

Please know that this letter is not about politics - it is about sharing crucial information with those in power and those who have the ability to influence others in this very trying time for our country - and, indeed, for the world.

I also sent a version of this same letter to the four most senior members of the leadership team at the Auburn University College of Engineering - my alma mater.

As for action on your part, I urge you to send similar letters to leaders you may know - leaders who are in a position to influence others regarding the elephant in the room: our grossly unsustainable way of life,  regardless of whether we power it with fossil fuels or renewables.

Letter to former co-worker - now a U.S. Senator

Dear Senator,

As the only U.S. senator that I know personally, I am writing to request your involvement in a process regarding the most important topic in the history of humanity - our future as a species. As a senator and a "big picture" guy with two engineering degrees from Georgia Tech, coupled with vast amounts of business leadership experience, you are in an ideal position to bring a very disturbing problem (along with an envisioned solution) to the world's attention.

Today's subject traces back to a conversation that I had with the world-renowned filmmaker and environmentalist, James Cameron, in April of 2019. During that conversation, he described our dilemma in stark terms - in a statement and in a question:

The Statement.  The world is completely delusional and going to hell in a handbasket as fast as humanly possible.

The Question. How do we make the crash as soft a landing as possible for some kind of continuation of humanity?

Fast-forward thirteen months. The above statement and question now appear on the cover of OUTCRY, a new book - in which we address humanity's underlying sustainability problem - along with an envisioned solution.

I began writing  Outcry in the late summer of 2019 - a book that focuses on the urgent alarms that we have been hearing from nature for the last fifty years and how those alarming sustainability issues will likely lead to the extinction of our species if we fail to take decisive action.

Even though I am typically an optimist, I must admit that, up until the beginning of the pandemic, it seemed to be extremely unlikely that we humans would ever get ultra-serious about transforming our consumption-heavy civilization into one that can be sustained by nature indefinitely. But then, as we were about to finish  Outcry  a few months ago, Covid-19 exploded into our lives with a vengeance.

It was that enormous, global disruption (that has been so terribly painful for millions of people) that prompted an idea. This just might be the much-needed, wake-up call that could jolt us into seriously embracing the ultimate challenge of our 300,000-year presence on this planet - one of re-inventing the unsustainable way we are now living in the developed world.

Frankly speaking, up until the beginning of the pandemic, I would've estimated that there was less than a five percent chance that our band of eight billion humans would ever get serious enough about sustainable living to prevent the extinction of our species before the end of this century. But now, I believe that the odds are much greater that we will somehow figure it all out before it's too late.

And that, my friend, is the  silver lining of Covid-19  that is mentioned on the cover of our new book.

My primary fear is that we will not  ever figure it out, or that we won't figure it out until five or six billion people have died. Our new book is aimed at jolting enough of us into action - soon enough - to enable this story to have a happy ending. In  Outcry, we report on the ear-piercing alarms we're hearing from nature - along with a wake-up call that consists of extensive, summarized, environmental data and conclusions from eleven "big picture" scientists. Our entire book is aimed at  sparking a robust global conversation about  what we must do to have a chance of surviving and thriving in harmony with nature - indefinitely.

In order to help our readers get their "big picture" thought processes going, we included in the book our own "vision" of how that totally sustainable human civilization might look, how it might be managed, how the economy might work and why that envisioned future way of life might someday be preferred by most people over what we have today.

Also, in the book, we do our best to answer this question:

To be sure, we're not so  naïve as to believe that our envisioned future way of living  will ever become a reality as we have described it. We're just trying to get enough people talking about it to make a difference. To that extent, we solicit your help as we strive to  jolt the world leaders into thinking differently .

Please take a look at the preview of the book below and consider taking a few hours to read the entire book. Then, let's talk about next steps. If you prefer, I will gladly meet with you in Washington at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely, Jim Hicks

PS:  Our book, for a host of environmental reasons, is only available as an e-book on Amazon. As such, it also contains hyperlinks to hundreds of references and videos.

PS: You may be wondering how you can help promote the never-ending search for a way to save our species. You can get me in front of some audiences, including virtual, that you think might be ready to hear about the long-overdue, global "conversation" about our survival.

You can join my mailing list and/or find all of my previous postings by visiting the SOS Memos page on my website Here are a few of them:

As always, I am just trying to spark a global conversation about what is needed. By sharing a vision of what I believe is possible, I hope to influence others to think bigger, better and bolder.

********************

As for speaking, I continue to search for mainstream audiences who may have an interest in learning more about a realistically hopeful vision for our future - and their role in making that vision come true. During the pandemic, let me know if you'd like to set up a Zoom virtual talk with your group.

In the months ahead, I will continue to focus on the urgent need for a totally reinvented greening of our civilization - beginning with a model in the USA that could be applied globally over the next fifty years.

Upcoming talks : There are lots of open dates on my calendar as my next scheduled talk is  at Camp Plant-Stock in Black Mountain, NC, in August, a "live" week-end affair that is now being converted into an online, virtual event.

As for the specifics of my topic, I invite you to  contact me directly  about how I might tailor my presentation to best suit an audience you may have in mind:

Universities,  churches,  think-tanks, legislative bodies, environmental  organizations, alumni associations, leadership clubs, PTA's  and/or civic groups who may appreciate a message of reality and hope for our future.

Please let me hear from you directly regarding any ideas or questions you may have.

What else can you do to help? Three things:

1. Live as greenly as possible while doing all that you can to raise the awareness of "big picture" solutions that are crucially necessary for saving our civilization.

2. Share this BSB and my  "Mama Ain't Happy" BSB with prominent journalists, thought leaders and/or elected officials whom you respect. They need to learn a lot more about the many reasons why  Mama ain't happy.

3. Here are a few more GRATOLA-related blogs that you can share with your most powerful friends, leaders, journalists and movie producers.

Until next time, just remember...

Humanity is on a collision course with Nature.
A damaged Nature will survive. We may not.
We must change course to avert an ecological disaster.
