Organizational Highlights
CWSF Welcomes New Staff
Last week, the Council of Western State Foresters (CWSF) and the Western Forestry Leadership Coalition (WFLC) welcomed a new staff member, Halie Miyazawa.

Halie serves as the Organizational Services Assistant.

2021-2022 CWSF Executive Committee and WFLC Executive Board

The CWSF Executive Committee and WFLC Executive Board transition occurred following the National Association of State Foresters’ Annual Meeting.  

The 2021-2022 CWSF Executive Committee includes Chair Tom Claeys (ND), Incoming Chair Jason Hartman (KS), Secretary/Treasurer David Smith (HI), and Immediate Past Chair Sonya Germann (MT). 

The 2021-2022 WFLC Executive Board includes the above mentioned CWSF Executive Committee members, as well as Glenn Casamassa as Co-Lead (USDA Forest Service Region 6), Dr. Cynthia West as Research Station Representative (USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory/Northern Research Station), Tim Garcia as S&PF Director Representative (USDA Forest Service Regions 1 and 4), and Frank Beum as Incoming Co-Lead (USDA Forest Service Region 2).
Western Forest Legacy Publication
WFLC, in cooperation with western state forestry agencies and the USDA Forest Service, recently developed a publication highlighting the Forest Legacy Program (FLP). 

The publication features a collection of stories from 14 western states and the Federated States of Micronesia. Narratives in the publication aim to inform readers of the benefits of the FLP across western states.
Request for Proposals - Fire Prevention Messaging Project

CWSF is seeking to identify a contractor to develop a marketing plan and design digital assets focused on educating homeowners and landowners on the need to reduce human-caused wildfires.

The submission deadline is September 29 at 4:00 p.m. MDT.

Policy Update
This month, all eyes are on the infrastructure and reconciliation bills. The infrastructure bill has already passed the Senate, and a non-binding agreement for a vote in the House by September 27 is in place. Meanwhile, the text of the forestry section of the reconciliation bill was released by the House Agriculture Committee. It contains a potential influx of $40 billion for forestry.

Jamie Barnes is State Forester and Director of the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands. 

Jaelith Hall-Rivera is Deputy Chief for State and Private Forestry for the USDA Forest Service.

Brian Ferebee accepted the responsibility to lead a national team that will develop the USDA Forest Service's strategy to reduce wildfire risk and improve forest and community resilience.
