On May 28th, association members, business leaders and interested attendees joined NAA and the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) for the first in a series of webinars that bring together aviation and aerospace influencers to gain insight on the future of the industry. The number of attendees was double what was anticipated and the content more impactful and meaningful than could have been predicted.

The webinar featured four industry leaders from the most vital aviation sectors; general, business and commercial air travel. Host Amy Spowart, President and CEO of the NAHF, and moderator Greg Principato, President and CEO of the NAA, led the panel through a series of questions that highlighted the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on all areas of aviation and what the future looks like for the industry. Earlier this week, NAA announced an exciting new promotion, offering discounted membership pricing and expanded benefits to new and renewing members who purchase or upgrade to a silver, gold, or platinum (lifetime) membership in the month of June. A 20% discount will be applied to silver and gold memberships purchased and a 15% discount given for platinum memberships purchased. In NAA awards news, United States Air Force Captain Alexander E. Boules and Major Charles C. Stretch, the aircrew of Hawg 71 flight, were named the recipients of the 2019 Mackay Trophy. Administered by the United States Air Force and the NAA, the trophy is awarded for "... the most meritorious flight of the year by an Air Force person, persons, or organization." NAA looks forward to presenting the Mackay Trophy to the crew of Hawg 71 flight at a future awards ceremony.

The winners for the 2020 U.S. Youth Aviation Art Contest were selected in May by the contest's managing organization, the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO), in partnership with the NAA. The annual contest is part of a larger international effort to inspire youth to illustrate the importance of aviation through art. The 2020 theme, Flying Yesterday and Tomorrow, sparked students creative reflection about the evolution of aviation. To qualify for the U.S. national contest, all artwork was first submitted into state level competitions, with the winning entries forwarded to NASAO for national award consideration. This year, almost 200 works of art from 25 participating states were received. The national winners have been submitted into the international contest, which will be judged in June. Congratulations to the 2020 U.S. national winners!

NAA would also like to congratulate our corporate member, magniX and their partner AeroTEC, on a successful first flight of the world's largest, all electric aircraft. The Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, retrofitted with the Collier Trophy nominated magni500 electric propulsion system, flew for 30 minutes in Moses Lake, WA on May 28th. The flight served as an important first step towards magniX's vision of all-electric motors powering airplanes cleanly and more efficiently, benefiting the environment and lowering costs for operators and consumers.
