Josie Felt Lost Without Her

At age 15, Josie's young life had taken multiple wrong turns. Her mother was addicted to drugs, and her father was unknown. Her grandmother died from a stroke, and her grandfather could not care for her as his health declined. Dallas CASA Volunteer Found Inspiration to Volunteer in Grief
After her mother's passing, Patricia Wylie-Davis decided to go through volunteer training at Dallas CASA. Her mother served as an advocate before her death.
Wylie-Davis was sworn in this spring, two years after her mother had to resign from Dallas CASA due to health concerns.
Now working her first case, Wylie-Davis says she's humbled by the opportunity to be a sworn child advocate.
"My mom was so passionate about what she was doing. She talked about the training and how much she felt like she was learning, and her passion was contagious. There just didn't seem any better way for me to honor her than to follow in her footsteps."

Cherish the Children Luncheon Raises Funds for Dallas CASA
Dallas CASA's
Cherish the Children luncheon paid tribute to longtime friend of Dallas CASA Caroline Rose Hunt. Held April 5 at the Dallas Omni Hotel, the luncheon featured touches of Mrs. Hunt's legacy everywhere.
The now-permanently renamed Caroline Rose Hunt Cherish the Children Award was given to Rosewood for its longtime contributions to bettering the lives of children in Dallas. Guest speaker Steve Pemberton, author of A Chance in the World, shared with the audience of more than 400 how critical certain adults were in his life. "You never forget the first person who sees you not for your circumstances but for your possibilities," he said.

Comerica Bank Hosts Prom Dress Drive for Foster Youth
Comerica Bank's annual Prom Dress Drive matches donated prom dresses with teens. For the fifth year, Dallas CASA's building was turned into a pop-up prom dress boutique as foster teenagers shopped for dresses, shoes and accessories and received hair and makeup advice. Dallas CASA Children's Council volunteers were on hand to make sure each youth found the perfect outfit, including complimentary alterations. Teens from Dallas' Boys and Girls club were also able to shop over two weekends in March, ensuring those who needed attire for prom had it. Thank you to all who donated time or dresses to the event.

VARIDESK Donates Standing Desks
Coppell-based VARIDESK donated more than $50,000 worth of standing desks and chairs for staff members at Dallas CASA in March. Every employee interested in a standing desk was able to receive one. "Work is so collaborative and dynamic at Dallas CASA that the desks are a wonderful option for our employees," said Kathleen LaValle, president and CEO of Dallas CASA. "We're so grateful to VARIDESK for making our workspaces healthier and more supportive."

Dallas CASA Hosts Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness Event
Dallas' Child Abuse Prevention Coalition marked National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month with the Dallas County event at Dallas CASA April 12. WFAA meteorologist Colleen Coyle served as emcee for the event, which also featured Dallas County Commissioner Dr. Theresa Daniel, Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot and student Emily Williams from University of North Texas' group PUSH (Persevere Until Success Happens) who shared her moving story of life in foster care. The names of the 19 children who died in Dallas from abuse or neglect in 2018 were read aloud. "If you see something, say and do something," said Judge Andrea Martin Lane of the 304th Juvenile District Court. "We can all play a role in the prevention of child abuse."

Couple Channels Creativity To Benefit Abused Children
East Dallas couple Phil and Casey Green have taken a love of design and a knack for woodworking and turned it into a way to help abused and neglected children. For the last several years, the couple has created handmade children's furnishings for Dallas CASA's Cherish the Children luncheon. The items are offered during a silent auction, with funds raised going to benefit the children Dallas CASA serves. The Greens, parents of two young children, say this way of giving back is not only fun but meaningful. Read more on Dallas CASA's blog.

Are you bilingual in Spanish? Univision 23 recently featured Dallas CASA as a an opportunity for Spanish-speakers to put their skills to use. While about a third of children Dallas CASA serves are Hispanic, only about 11 percent of sworn volunteers are Hispanic.
