Distance Learning Plan Update by Grade Division
Teachers have reviewed the responses to the Distance Learning Survey by grade division. Please review a summary of updates to the distance learning plan here
Updated Attendance Policy for Distance Learning
Teachers will be tracking student engagement. Students who are not participating in class meetings, advisory, turning in required assignments, or otherwise engaging with the provided content will be first contacted by their classroom teacher. If participation does not improve, administration will contact parents, followed by the guidance counselor, and in cases of extreme absenteeism, a conference may be scheduled with the Head of School.

Early Learner attendance will be measured by participation in class meetings, engagement with teacher provided activities, and parent communication.

Lower School attendance will be measured by participation in class meetings, engagement with teacher provided activities, completion and submission of required assignments, and parent communication.

Upper School attendance will be measured by participation in advisory and office hours, completion and submission of required assignments, student-teacher communication, and when applicable, parent communication.
Zoom Privacy Update
The Summit is aware of the concerns regarding Zoom privacy, and we want to share with you some of the practices The Summit has implemented to protect student privacy while using Zoom. First, all Zoom meeting links are now password protected and are only shared directly to users through a password protected platform (email, Google Classroom, etc.). Teachers have been instructed not to post Zoom meeting links on any public platform, such as a blog. The waiting room feature is also enabled on all classroom Zoom meetings, so the host (teacher) must  approve and admit all participants into the meeting (no one can enter the meeting without this permission). As with all technology use, we strive to protect our students while enabling them to share and learn in a safe and interactive environment.
Senior Spotlight: McKenzie Blakey

Q&A with McKenzie

What grade were you in when you joined The Summit?
I joined The Summit in first grade and had Mrs. Alexander as my teacher.

What are you looking forward to most after graduating?
I am looking forward to meeting new people and exploring a new city. I love Springfield, but I've lived there all my life and I'm ready for a change of scenery. I also love meeting new people, so I'm excited for all the social opportunities college has to offer.

Where will you be attending college/university?
I will be attending Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

What major or course of study do you plan to pursue?
I plan on majoring in Christian leadership with minors in youth ministry and Spanish.

Why did you choose that?
I want to become a youth pastor, so Christian leadership and youth ministry will help me on that path. I feel like I didn't truly have a relationship with Christ until I became involved in my current youth group in my freshman year of high school, and I want to be able to give other kids and teenagers that opportunity. I've taken Spanish since first grade and I want to continue it so I don't lose my knowledge of the language. I also want to travel when I'm older, and speaking a second language will definitely help with that.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I love to travel, and so there are so many places I want to go. But if I had to pick just one, I would love to go on a tour of the Holy Land in the Middle East.

What is your favorite color of uniform polo and why?
I like all the really bright colors, but my absolute favorite color of uniform polo is purple. Purple is one of my favorite colors and I like how the gold logo looks on the purple background.

What is your favorite Summit memory or defining moment?
I've had many amazing memories during my time at The Summit, but my absolute favorite memory happened during fourth grade with Mrs. Anderson. We were learning about the ocean, which was already a favorite topic of mine, and we created our own ocean in our classroom. We put blue cellophane over the windows to give the room a blue tint and we all created life-size ocean animals and hung them on the walls and from the ceiling. I made a life-size beluga whale, which I actually still own today. Parents and other classes came and watched while we presented about our animals. Our classroom looked really cool and Mrs. Anderson let us keep our ocean up for a while.

How have you grown in the past four years?
These past four years I have realized that there is more to school than grades. When I began high school, I was very focused on maintaining good grades, and while grades are still very important to me, I also learned to appreciate the other aspects of school. I realized that social interaction and friendships are very important as well and that sometimes having fun is okay too. I needed to find a balance of all of those things, and I feel like I finally have.

What advice do you have for younger Summit students?
My advice for younger Summit students is to get really involved in The Summit community. One of the best parts of going to a small school is that you have the opportunity to get to know your peers and teachers very well. During my time at The Summit, my classmates, teachers, and the administrators became like a family to me, and I wouldn't be the same person I am today without their love, support, and guidance. At The Summit, you are surrounded by a group of amazing people who will always have your back, so take advantage of that.

Teacher Memories from  Mrs. Anderson

What memory comes to mind when I think of McKenzie? A little girl in elementary school with a big bounce in her walk, a huge smile, and a cheerful greeting as she arrived every morning. She had so much enthusiasm for learning, was a voracious reader, and loved to write. To this day, when I see McKenzie, she still has that bounce, smile, and always a cheerful greeting. She is a sweetheart!
Dear McKenzie... Love, Mom and Dad

McKenzie,
We are so incredibly proud of you!  Watching you grow up has been the "favorite part" of our days.  We would each like to share our hearts with you here.
From Mom - McKenzie, Raising you has been the greatest accomplishment of my life and loving you has been the greatest joy.  From the countless hours spent spinning faster and faster with Jack and Annie to Mother-Daughter trips across the United States, we've shared many tears and laughs.  Watching you grow, work hard and obtain goals, and grow in your faith has brought me so much joy and pride. As you prepare to graduate from The Summit, I wish you courage to soar to chase your most heartfelt dreams, and I wish you roots to remember where home is so that you may always return.  I love you so very much!
From Dad -- I never knew what dedication meant.  What expectation or hope encompassed.  How much I could appreciate a person - just them, themselves, alone.  There is a saying - children are magic, and make a parent more than they ever could be alone.  It is true.
I am so proud of who and what you are.  You are brilliant, quick, and most importantly - kind.  You make me a better person, and as the years keep spinning you'll keep doing so.  You are a hard act to follow, guide, or direct.  Which is cool (frustrating, but amazingly cool).  And wonderful.

Grow, fall, and fly.  You will do all of these things, because that is what a good life is.  Remember to spread your wings.  Believe in risk for reward and caution as necessary.  Remember where home is.  Take serious things with a grain of salt, and fun with the gravity laughter deserves.  Remember your past, look forward to your future, and dive headfirst into your now.  Have faith in God, yourself, and the bonds you forge and the beliefs you craft.  Remember there is a haven that will always welcome you, and use that to explore as much as you choose.  Our home will be yours.  Forever.

Keep being you.  Keep learning, keep growing, keep reading, keep writing.  The more you do, the more you know. Knowledge of any sort helps you, and the best wisdom gives you a firm foundation.  From which you can reach ever higher.  Towards whatever star guides you.

I love you more than I thought I could love.
I am prouder of you than I thought I could be of anything.
I will miss you more than my childhood.

And I am more excited to see where you go than I can even imagine or tell.  You are as prepared as we can make you - through education, time, love, and faith.  Go for the horizon you wish.

Remember to write home.

We love you, McKenzie!  And, we are so very proud of you!

Make Your Own Bubble Snake!

Materials: A sock (which won't get damaged), a half-liter size clear plastic bottle, a bowl of water, dish soap, and a craft knife.

Step 1: With the knife, cut the bottom off the bottle.

Step 2: Roll the sock over the open end of the bottle.

Step 3: Mix a good squirt of dish soap gently into the water (don't let it get too foamy).

Step 4: Dip the sock end of the bottle into the liquid, then blow through the neck. The bubble snake will emerge from the sock. ( Click here for tips and tricks.)

Share your pictures on social media and be sure to tag us @summitprepschool, so we can see your bubble snakes!
