Attention Prelaw Students and Alumni/ae: Pre-Law Handbook

The Prelaw Handbook has now been incorporated into the CMU Pre-Law Program web site.  This handbook is designed to take a "deeper dive" than our main pre-law web site into matters pertaining to pre-law interests and needs of current students and alumni/ae.  It discusses in much greater detail the relevant information and issues about exploration of law school as a professional school option, preparation for law school, the law school application process, financing law school, and several resources for additional reference.  This handbook is navigable by detailed bookmarks so that you can go straight to those sections that respond most directly to your questions and needs.

Comments or suggestions about both the handbook and web site are always welcome!

Sincerely,

Dr. Devine
Prelaw Advisor

Law, Culture, and Ethics Colloquium: "Eloquence and Agonism in Supreme Court Fundamental Rights Options"

Tuesday, April 23, 4:30 to 6 p.m., Baker Hall 255 B, Swank Room

Douglas Coulson (Associate Professor, CMU English Dept.) will present examples of the United States Supreme Court's most eloquent and moving arguments in praise of liberty and equality within fundamental rights jurisprudence. He points to the Court's use of epideictic registers in these cases, highlighting how they function strategically for the judiciary-an institution uniquely dependent on public acceptance-reflecting rare instances where the Court utilizes the rhetorical dimensions of law to overcome the limits of representation. Coulson argues these limits are the locus of the perennial conflict between law and rhetoric.
