A N ote fr om the DEI Office
As we are gearing towards the end of the Winter semester, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect upon some of the work that DEI did in this semester. The DEI Open House was a success. People really liked the informal mix and mingle format of the Open House and one of the popular feedback about the event was - games and prizes. That is why we had our second Open House where we gave away prizes and played games.

The DEI also organized ‘Faculty of Color : Meet and Greet’, in collaboration with Common Roots. The students of color felt that it created a welcoming space for them and that there should be more events like this in future. Beyond White Social Work, Part 1 and 2 was also a success , thereby proving that there is an increasing need towards having conversations around our racial and ethnic identities.

Lastly, I would like to emphasize the fact that the end of a semester can be really stressful for us students. There are assignment submissions and deadlines to be met. But in spite of this all, let us pledge that we will take care of our mental health. This is a pledge to myself that I will stop and breathe and take a walk outside and reserve some time in a day to decompress myself.

Celebrate Arab Heritage Month

Nationally, Arab Heritage Month is celebrated throughout the month of April. On campus, we begin our celebration on February 17 and conclude in mid-April. This year, many of the events focus on broadening the conversation about inclusion and exclusion, with the hopes of engaging in dialogue about the nuances of language, culture, and geography.

Check out a full listing of Arab Heritage Month here: https://mesa.umich.edu/article/arab-heritage-month
Celebrate A/PIA Heritage Month
Asian/Pacific Islander American Heritage Month (or A/PIA Heritage Month) is a university-wide celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander American Heritage. While the month is recognized officially in May, the United Asian American Student Organizations and the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs celebrate it from mid-March to mid-April, with a diverse range of events, lectures, workshops, and activities that honor A/PIA history.

Throughout the month, events will be added to the calendar below that may not necessarily be represented on the graphic calendar! Check back often for updates.

For questions about specific event information or in general about A/PIA Heritage Month, please contact the MESA office at (734) 763-9044 or by emailing  mesa.uofm@umich.edu . We are more than happy to help!
Out in Field Initiative
Out in Field Initiative - Freud Fellowship
The Freud Fellowship students ran a survey from different schools from the University of Michigan to determine whether students were familiar with Out in Field. It was determined that the students did not fully understand or know of the initiative.

Out in Field began as an initiative through the Dean's office to help students navigate their field experience while managing their identities, specifically LGBTQ+. The Freud Fellows dedicated their time over the past year further developing the initiative. This development consisted of gathering additional information through surveying both students and field instructors to gain additional information.

The Freud Fellowship consists of three students, Dillon Cathro, Stephanie Ray, and Ally Demaagd. As the current Freud Fellows transition out, the fellows are utilizing their remaining time to come up with recommendations for the incoming fellows that will pick up where they left off.

Admitted Student Night at the Charles H. Wright Museum for African American History

For the second year in a row, the Office of Student Services and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office has partnered to host an event for admitted students living in metro Detroit and Ohio at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

The event is an opportunity for prospective students to learn from faculty, staff, current students, and program directors about the various MSW Program options, as well as discuss topics that are relevant to the experiences and perspectives of Black and African-American students at the U-M School of Social Work.

This year's event took place on Friday, March 29th and allowed for incoming students to make connections with each other, and faculty and staff of the School.

"The best thing you  can do for a person is to inspire them . That's the best currency you can offer: inspiration. So, when a person can rely on you for that, that empowers them in every realm of their life. Being inspired, it empowers them in their relationships, in their business, in their art, in their creativity. It empowers them because without inspiration, you're dry."
