Meet BPRS-LA Member: Krystal Patrice Rhaburn

Current position/company or field? Student currently holding two paid internships - (1) Social Media Intern for the Los Robles Children's Choir and (2) Public Relations and Social Media Intern at David James Agency

Where were you born and raised? Norwalk, CA

Which college do you attend and what is your major? Senior at California Lutheran University majoring in Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations and Advertising and minoring in Spanish;

What do you love most about PR?
I love that PR offers the chance to build mutually beneficial relationships with other people and the level of human interaction and energy it encompasses.

What kind of work are you most passionate about?
Nonprofit organizations have my heart. I have volunteered with over 20 of them in the last seven years and have worked for a few as well. I aspire to be an executive at a nonprofit, such as the YMCA, which is my favorite.

First job in the business?
My first communication position was as an intern for a nonprofit organization. In the role I was heavily involved in outreach and grant acquiring efforts.

Best advice you've ever received?
Everything happens for a reason, and never give up and never stop striving to reach your goals.

Why did you join BPRS-LA?
I have actually had BPRS-LA's website bookmarked on my Google Chrome account for years because of how inspired I was to see so many people of color all a part of one organization and thriving in a field I have come to love. I am so happy to have finally joined and have the opportunity to be around so many professionals that I can learn from and build connections with, and just better myself overall.

BPRS-LA Salutes Beverly White
Beverly White of KNBC-TV selected by NABJ to receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Washington, D.C. (June 1, 2018) - The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) has selected Beverly White, general assignment reporter at NBC Southern California/KNBC, as the recipient of the 2018 Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award.

The annual honor is awarded to a journalist with at least 15 years of experience and a track record of extraordinary contributions to the enrichment, understanding and advancement of black life and culture. It is named for Chuck Stone, late columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News and former Tuskegee Airman, who died in 2014.

White said she was pleasantly surprised when NABJ President Sarah Glover telephoned her to tell her she'd won.

"I thought she got the number wrong," White said. "I've been coming to conventions forever and I know that's a big deal. I'm floored, flummoxed, flabbergasted and deeply honored, for real."

Glover explained why the organization picked the longtime broadcast journalist who also has served as a scholar-in-residence at Citrus College and adjunct professor at the University of Southern California.

"Beverly White is simply a legend, a broadcasting mainstay," said the NABJ president, who is social media editor for NBC-owned television stations.  "For more than a quarter of a century, Beverly has been delivering strong news stories in the country's second-largest market. To say she has a powerful presence that resonates with her viewers would be an understatement."
