The mission of the Tennis Alliance is to provide a year-round home for tennis in Anne Arundel County and to promote tennis as a sport for Life!
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

November 21, 2019

Dear Tennis Alliance Supporters and Members of the Tennis Community:

I write to share with you some new developments regarding the Tennis Center at Millersville Park. The Department of Recreation and Parks has adopted a new strategy to bring the Tennis Center at Millersville Park to completion. The Tennis Alliance has accepted this decision.

The County will now solicit, through its in-house Request for Proposal (RFP) process, a for-profit business to design, fund and construct the indoor court building (8 indoor hard courts) and clubhouse and operate the Tennis Center. The project scope has been reduced as requested by County Council Chairman Andrew Pruski. The plan for the County to construct 16 outdoor courts (12 hard and 4 clay) has changed to a plan to construct only 8 outdoor hard courts. For more information regarding these changes, please see the Tennis Alliance of Anne Arundel County website,  New Tennis Center  or contact the Tennis Alliance directly at  info@TennisAllianceAAC.org .

The Tennis Alliance will no longer be a partner with the County in the development of the new Tennis Center.  The Tennis Alliance will continue to support the Tennis Center project as a USTA Community Tennis Association promoting tennis for all ages and abilities in Anne Arundel County.

The Tennis Alliance, with the enthusiastic and persistent support of the tennis community, has provided invaluable assistance to the County over six years by developing a vision and plan for the Tennis Center, organizing community advocacy and political support, and investigating and determining best design solutions and specifications. Working with the Department of Recreation and Parks we have secured the 33-acre Millersville Park site for a public indoor/outdoor Tennis Center; navigated successfully the multi-year County Council budget approval process; and most importantly secured $6.53M in County construction funding for the project.

Director of Recreation and Parks, Rick Anthony, has assured the Tennis Alliance that the public purpose and community benefits of the Tennis Center will be maintained, and that the Tennis Center project remains on schedule to break ground in mid-2020.  We continue to applaud Mr. Anthony’s initiative in promoting this project.

I know the efforts of the tennis community, who have organized, volunteered, raised funds, and come together to stand up and to speak up, will come to fruition, and we look forward to seeing a vibrant year-round public Tennis Center in Anne Arundel County that engages citizens and offers programming for all ages and abilities.

Thank you for your support of the Tennis Alliance and our continuing mission to promote tennis as a sport for life and to provide more accessible public facilities and affordable programming here in Anne Arundel County!

All best,
Louise Gengler Thomas
President, Tennis Alliance of Anne Arundel County
