Senior Thesis
Virtual Reception & Show

Mark your calendars! We have our biggest event of the year, the Senior Thesis Exhibition & Opening Reception on Friday, June 12th and this year, the whole thing will be virtual.

Our seniors deserve celebrating!  As usual, they have spent the year working on their self-directed thesis projects and are excited to share them with you.  While we can't come together for our annual Drexel Photography Senior Thesis Exhibition and Opening at the Pearlstein Gallery this year, we will have a virtual exhibition opening and hope you all can attend.  The opening will be held via Zoom on June 12th at 6pm and will begin with our graduating class presenting their thesis work.  Each student will have a limited custom designed book in an edition of 50 as well as 10 prints accompanying each book. The books and prints will be available for sale.  Purchases can be made through DrexelPhotoSeniorThesis.com which will open on June 12th.  All proceeds from the book sales will go towards assisting returning photography students with their project material costs.

To "attend" the virtual Exhibition Opening and Presentation, please email [email protected] to be added to the zoom invitation list which will be sent out just before the event.

This year, more than ever, our students will appreciate your support!

Alumna Sydney Arroyo
Digiteching while Social Distancing

Sydney Arroyo, class of 2015, is an inspiring example of adaptability.  She has made clever changes to her business during this health crisis.  Click here to read the full article.

Radius Book Scholarship Award Winner

Congratulations to  Tom Scanlan , a current junior in our program, for winning a Radius Books scholarship. Just 2 scholarships were awarded to full-time photography students currently working at the undergraduate or graduate level to attend the intensive bookmaking workshop that will be team taught by David Chickey, Alex Webb, and Rebecca Norris Webb. The 2020 scholarship applications were judged by curator and writer David Campany.

Natalie Obermaier
Exploring new Mediums

Natalie Obermaier, alum, has been using this time during stay-at-home orders as a sort of residency.  She made her first sculpture, something she has been dreaming up for months, but was finally afforded the time to start.

She has also been making masks, but not the protective kind.  These are masks that Natalie hand cut out and "tried on" different "models".

Lori Zimmer's New Book

Lori Zimmer, class of 2001, has a new book being released in September  with Running Press an imprint of Hachette.  The book is titled Art Hiding in New York - An Illustrated Guide to the City's Secret Masterpieces.

More information is available here.

Press, Updates and Shows

Mike Arrison, alum,  had a 3-week road trip planned for April, traveling from Philadelphia down through the Appalachians into North Carolina & Tennessee, out to the Mississippi River, following that northwards into Michigan and then back to Philly, conducting a variety of shoots along the way. All of this was canceled i n the wake of this global pandemic.  Adapting to the current situation, Mike  has two primary projects concerning coronavirus.  He  has been conducting photoshoots via FaceTime with models & couples, which has been a fascinating adjustment to a new form of collaboration.
Mike has also been documenting the various closed & shuttered businesses throughout the Philadelphia area. This has spawned a study of the various signs placed in the windows of these businesses, often hastily drawn up, detailing the reasons for their closures, the expected/hopeful timelines, and how their business has moved online, if at all. He also has been studying the shuttered bars and restaurants, once swarming with life and activity, now sitting empty and boarded up.

Emily Frances, alum, is currently running a weekly group critique via Zoom for professional photographers. Each week, photographers are provided a theme/subject matter with inspirational resources and at the end of the week photographers hand in 2-3 images for the group to talk about. Reach out to Emily directly to be included in the group.

Andrea Modica, faculty, was featured in Italian Vogue in February.  The Collector Daily Newsletter reviewed Andrea Modica's Lentini.  One of her images was included on page 131 of Jill Enfield's Guide to Photographic Alternative Processes: Popular Historical and Contemporary Techniques (Alternative Process Photography) 1st Edition.

Peter Murray, alum, was commissioned to photograph Dr. David Fajgenbaum from HUP for Reader's Digest's May issue. Dr. Fajgenbaum was diagnosed with Castleman's Disease.  The disease is incredibly rare with little known about it.  After almost dying 5 times from flare ups related to the disease, he decided to take up the cause and find the cure himself.  He recently switched his focus to finding a treatment for COVID-19.  He just did an interview on NPR's Fresh Air also.

Ethan O'Grady, junior, had a  photograph included in an online exhibition that came from an open call for contemporary black + white photography. The online journal is called "In the In-Between", and the show itself named   Primal Sight.
The photos were selected by guest curator Efrem Zelony-Mindell and the journal's founder/editor in chief Gregory Eddi Jones. Also, the selected photos are slated be published in a monograph by the publisher Gnomic Book later this year.

Sam Peltz, alum, in his role as Cinematographer and Content Producer at the Chicago Cubs, his team has have some nice recognitions over the past few months. They won two Sports Clio awards, were nominated for a Webby award, and won three Emmy awards in the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Midwest Region. In addition to the team awards, Sam was recognized individually with an Emmy for Outstanding Craft Achievement in Photography.

Andre Rucker, alum, photographed the April cover of Philly Mag.

Rachel Wisniewski, alum, working as a freelancer has recently covered multiple stories covering life under Covid-19.
Article for WHYY about how COVID is affecting undocumented workers in Philly.
Article for WHYY about how farmers markets are safer than super markets right now.
Rachel also photographed the stay-at-home protest in Harrisburg for Reuters, which was picked up by the New York Times, Washington Post, New York Post, US News & World Report, ABC, and more.
And Rachel was also accepted into the Solutions Journalism mentorship program.
Alumni, please don't forget to let us know what you are doing.  We would love to hear (and feature) any exhibitions, new work, contests, articles, or anything else that you have been doing.  Send us an email or catch us on Facebook with your news today.

Sincerely,

Paul Runyon, Sr.
