September 2021: Palapa Society News
Welcome Back Palapa School Students
Construction of The Palapa School’s second story is complete. Desks and furniture are all in place and new textbooks are neatly stacked awaiting the students' return. This is the year The Palapa School marks its first class of Seniors. While all is ready, not all will happen as we had hoped.

Due to Covid, the Federal Department of Education (SecretarĂa de EducaciĂłn PĂşblica - SEP) has not given approval for schools in Baja California Sur to reopen for in-person learning. While we await guidance from SEP expected mid-month, Director Anna and the Palapa Teachers have developed teaching plans for both online and hybrid (partial at-home and on-campus) learning for the start of the school year. This week, the students will be taking a series of diagnostic tests online to assess their skill levels in math, reading, and writing.

We look forward to introducing you to this year’s extraordinary team of teachers and sharing our students' progress.
First Annual Scholarship Drive Update
With just one week to go, The Palapa Society is nearing its First Annual Scholarship Drive goal of $100,000 USD. We currently stand at $84,000 and are looking to the Palapa community to help with a final push of $16,000. That’s just 32 more donors at $500 each!

This annual Scholarship Fund will directly help students and their families offset the cost of receiving a high quality education at The Palapa School.

Would you please consider being part of the success of this fundraiser?

SAHM Family Foundation
The previous school year was a challenge for many students of The Palapa School as well as their families. To help, The SAHM Family Foundation provided assistance through the Student Support Program offering social-emotional support by way of art-therapeutic and mindfulness workshops.

One of these workshops, facilitated by Mónica Rodríguez Cortés, aimed to provide students with tools for stress management. This workshop was offered to both middle and high school students.

Fond Farewell to Jayna Schweitzer
In 2011, long-time Board Member of The Palapa Society, Donna Viglione, introduced The Palapa Society’s first intern, Jayna Schweitzer. Jayna had grown up visiting her grandparents in Todos Santos and had an interest working in education. Jayna became a teacher at the Puente (Bridge to English) program for children, then Assistant to Puente Director Serena Saltzman, and later was promoted to Puente Director when Serena took on a new role. Jayna's role for the past two years was the Executive Director of Programs and Facilities.

In her many roles at Puente, Jayna brought dedication and enthusiasm. She developed the children’s summer program into a popular summer day camp that included arts and crafts focused on ecology and environmental protection. She also developed a water safety course with Mario’s Surf School.

In 2015, Jayna became Secretary and member of the Education Committee as it began to design The Palapa School and its programming. Her participation and leadership on key issues of construction, staffing, and program development helped shape The Palapa School. Jayna's leadership of staff recruitment efforts has been especially important -- we can thank her for her assessments of candidates which were always key to our decision making.

Little Free Libraries Turn One!
One year ago, the Todos Santos Little Free Libraries were a brainstorm by Donna Schultz. The idea was to provide whimsical containers throughout the community where books could be exchanged for free. Located at La Esquina, Padrino Clinic, and the Parque Los Pinos, these treasured mini-libraries continue to serve the community. ENJOY!!
