Bishop John Ambrose Watterson Honored
|
|
In the spirit of ecumenical relationships, First Congregational Church celebrated Bishop John Ambrose Watterson on Friday, September 27, 2019 at the Washington Gladden Social Justice Park at the corner of East Broad Street and Cleveland Avenue in Columbus. Bishop Watterson was the second bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Columbus, serving from 1880-1899. Rev. Washington Gladden and Bishop Watterson were great friends at a time when many Protestant ministers would not associate with Catholic priests or bishops. They partnered to address social issues in Columbus, including municipal government reforms and restrictions on gambling and liquor sales. Rev. Gladden denounced bigoted attacks on the Catholic Church, which were common at the time. He received an honorary degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1895, making him the first non-Catholic to receive this honor. Also, First Congregational Church was the first Abolitionist church in central Ohio. Together, Bishop Watterson and Rev. Gladden tackled the issues of the day and left a legacy worth celebrating.
