Great News--The
Imagine Your Story Contest
has been extended through Aug 31st.
We have three prizes ($35 Visa Gift Cards)
for winning entries in the children, teen, and adult age categories.
Children, 7-12
Write a 500 (max) word short story that includes:
- A book
- Summer weather
- Your favorite color
Teen, 13-17
Write a 500-1000 word short story using one of the following titles:
- Down Library Drive
- The Hermit, the Lion, and the Unicycle
- Copy, Paste, Repeat
Adult, 18 and up
Write a 500-1000 word short story about the Summer of 2020 beginning with the lines
"Dear Reader, I wish I could tell you that the Summer
of 2020..."
To enter, send your stories to
collection@loomislibrary.org. Please include your name, age category, and a phone number where we can contact you. Submissions are due by Aug 31, 2020. Winners from each category will be selected by our team of judges. Prizes will be awarded on Saturday, Sept 5th.

Dear Community,
While many families are getting ready to start school or continue with distance learning, it continues to be a priority to make as much of the library accessible while keeping everyone safe. One challenge we have is getting the word out that
while our doors are closed, we are providing modified services and have extended our online learning resources. Word of Mouth is still a highly effective mode of communication in a small community. Can you please help us by talking with you friends and neighbors about the Loomis Library resources and services?
Here is an update:
Online services are available to library card holders, including eBooks, audiobooks, and streaming video. If you don't have a library card, you can sign up for one
here.
- Curbside service: Tuesdays, 1-7 pm, Wednesdays 10- am - 2 pm, and Saturdays 1-5 pm. Order items from the library collection online and we will call to arrange for curbside pickup.
- The drop box is open during curbside hours. T 1-7, W 10-2, Sat 1-5
- Free Public WiFi access is available in our parking lot.
- Online Programs include: Preschool Storytime, Page Turner's Book Club, Historical Society's Throwback Thursday, Poems for Peculiar Times, and access to other virtual programs on our Facebook page.
- NEW! Seeds from the seed catalog are available for fall planting. Make an appointment for curbside pickup! Fill out the order form here.
- Virtual Science Talks with NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassadors, Tim Pinkney, and Richard Sandler. Stuck at home, but want to do some traveling? Then we've got you covered. You can check out the next installment of this fun and informative series about the planets in our solar system virtually on August 3rd. Our topic: Venus-Goddess of Love or Scorched Devil? (see details and Zoom login below).
- Take-and-Make Craft Kits from the Maker Space: Fridays at 12 pm. Our Social Distancing Unicorn will bring the kits to the curbside and be available for a brief visit until 12:30 pm. The Take and Make Kits will remain out front on the pink cart while supplies last. Please help yourself to one kit per child.
- The Summer Reading Challenge was so much fun that we have created new challenges and will add more this coming fall. NEW Reading Challenge: 1000 Books Before Kindergarten for children 0-5. Register now on BEANSTACK.If you already have a Beanstack account, you will find the challenge on the menu if you have registered a child five and under.

Due dates for all library materials are based on the 21-day checkout date. If you have items that are past their due date, please return them during drop box hours--
Tuesdays 1-7pm, Wednesday 10 am-2 pm, and Saturdays 1-5 pm. Overdue fines are suspended until further notice.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Reading Challenge!
|
|
Enjoy reading 1,000 books with your little ones! Log reading,earn badges, and unlock prizes along the way. Reading and storytelling with your child promotes brain development and imagination, teaches your child about language and emotions, and strengthens your relationship. Anytime is a good time for a book or story! Try to share at least one book or story each day.
Here’s how it works:
- Read to your child and and log the books that you read. You can read anything you'd like, including books you have at home, from the library using curbside delivery, or that you find online. You can borrow eBooks and downloadable audio books from our Hoopla site too!
- Earn badges for reading and logging the books you read. Prizes will be awarded at 100, 200, 300, 500, and every 100 book milestone up to 1,000.
- Prizes can be picked up using curbside delivery by appointment!

What is HOOPLA?
Hoopla is a digital media lending service powered by local libraries worldwide. Users sign up with an email address, password, and their library card information and Hoopla gives them access to their local library's collection of digital titles. Users can borrow

titles per month.

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the U.S. Census Bureau is adjusting 2020 Census operations in order to protect the health and safety of the staff and the public and make sure they get the same population counted another way. You can learn more about it here:
The Census is critical. Not only does it affect political representation, it also directs billions of dollars in government funding to local programs and services. Funding for education, healthcare, and infrastructure, such as roads, is allocated utilizing census data. For every person missed during the Census, Placer County stands to
lose $1,000 in federal funding, per year for 10 years.
So far over half the households have been counted. If you have not filled out the 2020 Census you can do it online here:
