COVID-19: Sherman Family Celebrates Adaptability

With Sherman College’s switch to online learning, the college community has taken numerous changes in stride. To highlight our students, faculty and even some of our furry friends, the college has launched several projects on social media. Keep an eye out on our college Facebook page, our Admissions Facebook page, and our main Instagram page, as well as our Admissions Instagram.
 
You’ll find student profiles, faculty spotlights, furry study-mates and co-workers, and even an occasional story time post with our employees reading their favorite children’s books! We hope these posts help inspire you and brighten your days during this time.
 
College Develops Virtual Tours, Visits for Future Students

In the wake of temporarily closing its campus to the public, the Admission Office wasted no time finding new and creative ways to provide prospective students with a Sherman experience by creating two campus tours. The first is a brief video tour with pop-up graphics highlighting the main features of each building on campus. The second is a 360-degree virtual tour that provides a more robust experience for those who want to see Sherman’s campus from afar; this version will be completed soon.
 
In addition, future D.C.s can now explore a future career in chiropractic and meet with Admissions staff from the comfort of their own homes. The Admission Office has been hosting visits on Zoom to allow prospective students to meet with admissions counselors, Student Ambassadors and even President Edwin Cordero, D.C. Lyceum 2020 Pivots to Virtual Event
 
More than 700 people participated in Sherman College ’ s Lyceum this year from their homes and offices as the program was held as a live-streaming event for the first time ever.

State of the College: Watch Online

Lyceum 2020 made the most of the technology available today by live-streaming its exceptional lineup of presenters for registrants. These programs, as usual, included the State of the College address.

Sherman Student Ambassadors Embrace Digital Leadership
 
The admissions department would like to recognize and thank the Sherman College Student Ambassadors, an amazing group of students who have shown their strengths and reliability during times of uncertainty. Student Ambassadors have gone above and beyond by leading virtual campus tours, welcoming new applicant students during Instant Decisions Days, and opening their lives to social media by way of video and photo posts.
 
The Sherman College Student Ambassadors hosted their first virtual quarterly dinner on May 28. Students received a grub-hub gift card in lieu of their typical dinner options. During the event, several group recognitions took place. Graduating Ambassadors were recognized with their program plaques and honor cords; this group includes Taylor Conrad, Terence Hoff, Robyn Kirby, Angelica Lopez, Nicole Mercado, Tyler Speed and Charles Tucker.
 
The group also welcomed and recognized new ambassadors as they begin their leadership roles. These students include Joshua Black, Jessica Crowley, Joshua Crowley, Teresa Echols, Marissa Hanna, Brooke Jackson, Lucas Maynard, Clint Noiseau, Alex Peeler, Aryn Thomas and Rylee Yorgason.
 
Students voted on their peers, and quarterly awards were given to Showcase Sherman MVPs Nicole Mercado and Lorianne Perez; Tyler Speed was named Ambassador of the Quarter; and Charmi Patel was named Officer of the Quarter. To learn more about this program, visit www.sherman.edu/ambassadors .

Why Chiropractic:
My parents’ best friend who introduced them to each other is a second generation chiropractor, so I have been around it my whole life. I always wanted to help people, and I like the preventative and non-invasive approach of chiropractic.

Favorite thing about Sherman:
The family atmosphere. Right from day one, everyone from students to staff made me feel like I was at home and a part of a big family.

Favorite thing about the Upstate:
So many amazing restaurants and so much cool nature. Go explore!

Next Showcase Sherman Weekend Scheduled (Tentatively) for August

S howcase Sherman Weekend is designed to allow prospective students and their families to explore chiropractic and immerse themselves in the Sherman College experience. Future doctors of chiropractic will ignite their passion for leadership and learn how to begin their pursuit of joining the rewarding profession of chiropractic. Attendees tour campus, participate in leadership exercises, attend a palpation session, explore downtown Spartanburg and more. Health profession advisors are also encouraged to visit to learn more about the college and chiropractic so they can best serve the students they mentor.

Showing Students the Art of Adaptation in Practice

When students involved with the Practice Management Observational Elective (PMOE) program signed up for their final quarter’s observational elective course, they had no idea how much they would be learning about how to manage quick adaption in running a practice. Knowing that all processes take time, individual practices had to change almost overnight to succeed and thrive.

PMOE student participants are actively engaged at their individual office sites and logging in their hours for completion. This allows them to see firsthand that no matter how much prep work a practice might do, they still will be faced with external forces.

The students meet on a weekly basis on an accountability call with Instructor of Clinical Sciences Heath Treharne, M.S., D.C., discussing any issues and sharing the adaptations each office made to serve its patient population. This process gives the students a huge advantage in seeing how not only one office has changed, but learning about all the offices where students are observing and assisting. Read more on the blog .
Sherman College Names 2020 Award Recipients at Lyceum

Sherman College honored alumni, chiropractors, and supporters during its 47th Lyceum, a homecoming and continuing education event attended by hundreds of chiropractors and students throughout the U.S. and internationally. Lyceum is held each May and involves three days of seminars, special events and other programs; this year’s Lyceum was held as a live-streaming event for the first time ever to preserve this crucial continuing education opportunity for Doctors of Chiropractic. Health Center Case Doctor Sarah Hock D.C., ’08, CACCP and Mike McIntyre, D.C., ’18, recently published a case study in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research , Volume 2020, published on April 6.

The study is titled “Reduction of Neck Pain and Immobility in a 78-Year-Old Patient with Severe Degenerative Disc Disease and Osteoporosis Using Gonstead Chiropractic Care for Vertebral Subluxation.” Read the abstract online .
