State Supreme Court Ruling will
NOT
Affect School Closures
On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, the Wisconsin Supreme Court
struck down
Governor Tony Evers'
Safer At Home Order.
While restrictions on businesses and gatherings have been lifted for the time being, the ruling
does not
affect current school closures in our state.
Thus, Indian Community School will remain closed for the remainder of the school year.
We are continuing to consult with the Milwaukee Department of Health and the Franklin Health Department, regarding how this latest ruling may affect school programming and events in the future.
We encourage our students and families to continue practicing social distancing and adhere to the guidelines provided
by the CDC
and other health agencies.
It is expected that Governor Evers and the Wisconsin Legislature will release a new plan for businesses and gatherings soon — we will be sure to share that information with you at that time.
If you have any questions, please reach out to our Head of School, Mr Jason Dropik by email at jdropik@ics-edu.org or by calling (414) 525-6118.

Families, please don't forget to upload your Robin Dance video by 3:00 pm Wednesday!
I’m so excited to share this FAMILY SINGING CONTEST with you! The purpose of this project is to celebrate the things we currently have such as, good health, food, water, shelter and most of all, family! Together, we can extend a
big
bundle of gratitude through good thoughts, encouragement, teaching, singing and maybe even a little dancing.
But first, with a little help from one of my mentors, it was decided to jazz-up this project just a bit!
Wouldn’t it be cool if this was a contest?
A contest for each family to share their creativity, talents and togetherness!
We knew you’d love this idea! So, here’s the plan…

Learning Expectations for Students and Additional Support for ICS Families
With our Governor closing all schools for the remainder of the year, we would like you to know that we are here for you! We miss our students very much and would love nothing more than for all of us to be back together again, here at our school. Until that wonderful day comes, we remain committed to our students by continuing remote learning through the rest of the school year (June 10th).
Remote learning is a requirement for all ICS students. We expect every student
to complete every activity in each of their remote learning classes, including Specials (Art, Music and Physical Education) and Native Languages.
If students are unable to complete the work that was assigned to them, we ask that
you reach out to your child's teacher for help, and please encourage
your child to complete their work as soon as they are able to.
If you need support please let us know!
ICS Social Workers, the Family Resource Center, our teachers and interventionists are all here to support students and families. We are calling families each week to stay connected and offering additional support to students. Likewise, you are welcomed and encouraged to reach out to us anytime — you don’t have to wait for us to call you. As we are reaching out to students and families, we will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch meals, learning support, technology support, parent support groups and social/emotional support.

We are grateful that our school has dedicated teachers, interventionists and support staff who are doing everything they can to help our students achieve, learn and grow. While these times may be challenging for many different reasons, we want you to know how much we appreciate you and that we are here to support your family.

DURING REMOTE LEARNING,
Ms. Pfeifer and Mrs. Weishan’s third-graders have been working on increasing their vocabulary skills. Every day, they learn a new vocabulary word known as “The Word of the Day”. Their teachers encourage third-grade students to use the word
at least thirteen times
. They truly believe that if students use the new word that often, they will become familiarized with that word, and will gain the ability to use it in their daily lives. Learning new vocabulary supports reading development, fluency and comprehension. Word knowledge is connected to academic success, allowing students to understand new concepts and ideas. Students are encouraged to be "word heroes" every day!
With the help of their family, this incredible brother and sister team have taken on the task of making videos for each "word of the day". Their creativity is truly amazing! We would like to share some of their hard work with the rest of our Indian Community School family here in the newsletter. Please watch for their videos on our school's Facebook page and be prepared to be amazed!
We hope you enjoy these creative videos and join us in applauding our ICS word heroes!

What you need to know about COVID-19/Cornavirus
This is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation and we will provide updated information as it becomes available, in addition to updated guidance.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Stay home when you are sick and keep your child home when they are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a face mask.
- CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a face mask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
- Face masks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of face masks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
