What a
great time
we had last week during the
first Virtual
Summer Leadership Conference!
Our members came for the learning and stayed for the fun! This first-time virtual conference,
sponsored by ClassLink
, kicked off on Monday with the presentation of the Peter C.Young Award to Dr. Mike Cook from AESA Executive Director Joan Wade!
Each day of the four-day conference
, attendees captured ideas on how to grow their services during a recession; the importance of leadership in changing systems; and, listened to a panel of ESA leaders on how they are navigating COVID-19 in their ESA.
Time was spent being thoughtful and discussing diversity, belonging, inclusion, and equity.
We were not in Nashville as we intended to be; however, each afternoon ended with live entertainment!
Overall, attendees left feeling refreshed and ready
to head into a better tomorrow.

Peter C. Young Service Award Recipient

We congratulate Dr. Mike Cook as the 2020 Peter C. Young Award recipient and we thank him for his service to AESA
.

Annually, the Executive Council may select a member who demonstrates outstanding service to AESA for the Peter C. Young Service Award.
This award is announced at the Summer Leadership Conference.
|
|
Dr. Mike Cook,
Executive Director of ESSDACK, was awarded the Peter C. Young Award as part of the AESA Foundation Virtual Summer Leadership Conference opening session.
He oversees the many ESSDACK activities, services, and personnel. A former teacher and administrator, he has been at the helm of the organization since 1997.
Mike received his doctoral degree from Wichita State University, where his research emphasis was on the use of scenario building as a tool for the strategic planning process. His interest lies in the future of education, organizational development, and leadership. This area of interest has led him to develop and promote a method of scenario planning that aids school and business personnel in developing multiple plausible futures for their organizations.
In addition, he is a Certified Master Trainer in the Implications Wheel, a strategic exploration tool developed by world futurist Joel Barker. Mike has worked with education, business, hospital, church, and community groups to explore the future and formulate organizational visions.
Mike has been a key member of the AESA family. He served as president of the AESA Executive Council and guided the work of the council for nearly a decade. Mike has also served on the AESA Foundation Board for many years. Not only has Mike been around a lot – he has dedicated his time, talents, and his team to numerous AESA events.
Mike also puts his wonderful auctioneering skills to work at the annual AESA Foundation auction at the annual conference. Mike makes things fun and has turned the live auction into the biggest fundraiser for the foundation. And now, Mike and his ESSDACK team stepped up to run the silent auction too.
Many of you have attended the "6 in 60" sessions at our annual conference or the "ESA Talks" – both of which are Mike Cook innovations. Mike came up with the ideas and facilitated the sessions.
AESA has dedicated staff, but it has a very small staff. All the heavy lifting at the conferences is not possible without the support of the members. Dr. Mike Cook is one of those members who steps up time and time again.

The Summer Leadership Conference peer to peer discussions revealed an interest in ESAs wanting to improve their knowledge, skills and abilities to price services. We are happy to let you know that AESA recently developed a three-part series on how to price with confidence in an uncertain environment.
|
Pricing is challenging when things are “normal”. So how can you price with confidence in an environment that is characterized by so much uncertainty? The first step to confidence, in any environment, is understanding the underlying principles that create a firm foundation upon which to build. This series is designed to provide training in and practice applying fundamental principles which will guide you and allow you to price with confidence in any environment.
Session 1: PRICING FUNDAMENTALS
This interactive session introduces the fundamentals of pricing using ESA examples and interactive exercises to provide a hands-on experience. Learn how to properly identify the different costs associated with a product or service and how those costs should impact a good pricing model.
Session 2: PRICING FOR VIRTUAL SERVICES
This session will focus specifically on solutions to the challenges of pricing for services delivered virtually, not face-to-face. Whether the services are brand new or changed from in-person to remote delivery, you will learn various ways to structure your pricing models to preserve customer loyalty and protect your bottom line. Current examples of ESA practice will be provided.
Session 3: PRICING AND EXPERIMENTATION: OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGES
Bolstered with ESA examples, this session will address how to structure meaningful experiments that will inform you on the critical effect of pricing on program enrollment. You will learn how to conduct pricing experiments ethically in the public arena. Strategies will be provided for addressing challenges such as a limited number of customers or the fact that ESA customers communicate frequently with each other.

There has been a change on the AESA Executive Council in the Western Region. Kristen Benson has accepted a new position which is not with an ESA. She resigned from the council earlier this month.
At their summer meeting, the AESA Executive Council unanimously appointed Pat Sublette, Superintendent of Columbia Gorge ESD in Oregon, as Western Region representative.
