APP welcomes Kimberlyn King-Hinds as new President

July 29, 2021 — The Association of Pacific Ports is very pleased to welcome Kimberlyn King-Hinds as our newly elected President. Representing the Commonwealth Ports Authority (CPA), Northern Mariana Islands, King-Hinds assumes the role following the tenure of Ian Marr from the Port of Nanaimo. “I’m looking forward to leading the APP and working with everyone to improve our port community through sharing knowledge and resources to benefit the communities we serve,” she said in accepting the position at the APP’s Annual General Meeting on July 29, 2021.

As Chair of the CPA Board of Directors, King-Hinds has had a distinguished career practicing law in both the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Hawaii. Currently in private practice addressing areas of family law, probate law and general civil litigation, King-Hinds is also the out-house counsel for the NMI Settlement Fund and Legal Counsel for the Tinian Mayor’s Office. Previous roles have included acting as in-house counsel for the NMI Settlement Fund, providing legal research for the Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center, and Acting Chief of Staff for the Office of the Mayor of Tinian and Aguiguan.

Port and Regional Trade Competitiveness in an Emerging Post-COVID World

The APP was very pleased to provide a special presentation at their Annual General Meeting. The session, Port and Regional Trade Competitiveness in an Emerging Post-COVID World, looked at shifting economic conditions, customer expectations, the emergence of new technologies and environmental regulations that are constant pressures facing ports and their customers. Moreover, confronting logistics and transportation challenges is required for increased port and regional trade competitiveness.

Featured speakers included Ms. Hanh D. Le-Griffin (Ph.D.)., Director, Ports and Marine Terminals for Hatch Engineering and also an Adjunct Associate Professor Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering University of Southern California; and Philip Davies (MA), a transportation economist with over thirty-five years of experience in market research, freight planning, and intercity passenger transportation. The session was moderated by Darryl Anderson (MBA), a transportation and maritime logistics executive with expertise in international business development, cross-functional team leadership, and competitive market positioning, delivering positive outcomes with robust and sustainable gains.

Trans Mountain provides $950,000 to the City of Merritt for infrastructure upgrades

August 5, 2021 — Trans Mountain and the City of Merritt have entered into a funding agreement that will see more than $950,000 invested into developing Merritt’s municipal bulk water and sanitary wastewater disposal systems. The funds will be used for the construction, operation and maintenance of the infrastructure in order to service Trans Mountain’s worker accommodation camp during its operation, as well as serving other local bulk water and sewage disposal users. The initiative ensures the camp minimizes impacts on the community and provides a lasting benefit for the City and the region.

HDR acquires civil engineering, environmental firm WRECO

August 5, 2021 — HDR is expanding its technical excellence by acquiring WRECO, experts in civil engineering, environmental compliance, geotechnical engineering and water resources planning. Going forward, they will do business as HDR | WRECO.

Alaska’s Senator highlights importance of infrastructure

August 4, 2021 — In a recent YouTube video, Alaska’s Senator Murkowski speaks about the importance of Alaska’s Marine Highway System for the state’s trade and commerce. The message of prioritizing Alaska’s infrastructure and ensuring a resilient and efficient supply chain is further reinforced through interviews with Port of Alaska’s Director, Stephen Ribuffo, and Jim Jager (Director of Business Continuity, External Affairs, and Facility Security Officer). The video demonstrates the reliance of Alaska on marine infrastructure and provides a great overview of operations.

Port of Skagit and Ziply Fiber bringing fiber optic infrastructure to eastern Skagit County

August 4, 2021 — Gig-speed fiber Internet service is on the way to rural communities in eastern Skagit County, thanks to a collaboration between the Port of Skagit and Ziply™ Fiber.

The Port of Skagit and Ziply Fiber entered into an agreement last week to connect homes and businesses in eastern Skagit County to fiber optic infrastructure, putting the speed, capacity, and reliability of Internet service for Skagit communities on par with larger cities around the country. This agreement will provide fiber-to-the-premise construction to more than 1,200 homes and businesses in Lyman, Hamilton, Concrete and Marblemount by the end of 2022.

Liebherr USA, Co. announces new Managing Director

August 3, 2021 — Liebherr is pleased to announce the appointment of Kai Friedrich as Managing Director of Liebherr USA, Co., the sales and service organization based in Newport News, Virginia. Friedrich will be taking over the role previously held by Peter Mayr.

Liebherr welcomes Kai Friedrich as Managing Director of Liebherr USA, Co. and Divisional Director of Construction Equipment. In his role as Managing Director, he will provide leadership and guidance necessary to oversee and implement the corporate and strategic plans for the nine product segments under Liebherr USA, Co., the sales and service organization. Port of Benton begins Prosser taxilane project

July 30, 2021 — As previously announced, the Port of Benton has received $600,854 through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) to make improvements and construct additional hangar sites at Prosser Airport (George O. Beardsley Field).

The primary entrance gate to the Prosser Airport will be closed beginning on Monday, August 2, 2021 and will remain closed until at least August 27, 2021. During this time, the main entrance shall be closed to all general traffic and admittance at this gate will be reserved for construction traffic only.

Installation of new caisson gate at Port of Taichung Dockyard gives strong, welcome boost to Port’s vessel maintenance and repair capabilities

July 30, 2021 — Port of Taichung, TIPC recently ordered the construction of a new caisson gate and the renovation of waterside gate facilities to significantly improve the safety, raise the quality, and reduce the costs of maintaining / repairing ships at the port. The new caisson gate was completed in May of this year (2021) and has already been inaugurated into service.

Port of Taichung is the only port in central Taiwan with drydocks sufficiently large to handle repair and maintenance work on ships in the 10,000GWT-and-higher class. The extensive drydock capacity at the port is further complemented by the extensive adjacent land area available for ship maintenance and repair support activities.

New highlights of Hualien Port — Water and Land Recreation and Sightseeing Corridor Project of Inner Harbor Wharf

July 30, 2021 — In order to promote the development of waterfront tourism in the inner port and connect the east coast water and land tourism and recreational corridors, the Hualien Port Branch has entrusted a consulting company to plan for the development of the eastern Coastal cultural and creative warehouse market and island-hopping travel and supply base for exploratory cruise ships.

Maritime and Port Bureau promotes the “Three Lines of Defense” Joint Inspection Project

July 28, 2021 — The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) held a ministerial meeting yesterday (June 24th) in which the Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) reported on the “Joint Inspection and Supervision on Strengthening Navigation Safety of RO-RO Passenger Ships” project. Minister Wang Kwo-Tsai affirmed that the MPB has taken the initiative to conduct joint inspections of three large roll-on/roll-off (RO-RO) passenger and cargo ships, including the “TAI HWA”, “TAI MA”, and “TAIMA STAR”, in order to strengthen the navigation safety to outlying islands. Problems were identified through potential risk assessment, and the inspections were extended to safety management and seafarer management, while early preventive measures were taken to effectively increase the ship safety rate to 100%. 

Neal elected Long Beach Harbor Commission President

July 27, 2021 — Harbor Commissioner Steven Neal was elected Monday as President of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, the five-member panel that oversees the Port of Long Beach.

The board also elected Sharon L. Weissman as Vice President and Bobby Olvera Jr. as Secretary. Each July, Commissioners select a President and two board officers to serve one-year terms.

July 23, 2021 — Reporting to the Sr. Deputy Port Director, Real Estate & Port Development, the Director administers the Port’s real estate functions (leasing, development, maintenance), which also includes managing the Port’s electric utility, Foreign Trade Zone, and fire protection services. This position collaborates with executive team regarding the Port’s strategic planning activities through analysis and provides recommendations as to the best use of Port land, facilities, and capital resources. The ideal contender will be a key member of the Port’s leadership team with potential for upward mobility within the department and the organization.

Reid Middleton celebrates 30 years in Alaska

July 22, 2021 — In 1991, Reid Middleton opened their Anchorage office. Over the last 30 years, they’ve had the chance to work on a lot of projects…and look forward to the opportunity to work on many, many more! For their 30th anniversary of serving the Last Frontier, they looked back at some of their memorable projects in Alaska, including the U.S. Coast Guard Kodiak Fuel Pier & Cargo Wharf Upgrade. 

Port of Grays Harbor announces strategic reorganization and promotions for future growth

July 21, 2021 – Positioning itself for future growth, the Port of Grays Harbor announced a restructuring of the organization, along with well-earned promotions in several departments. The changes will also create new opportunities for employment throughout Port facilities.

“The business and functions of the Port have grown and continue to change as we adapt to today’s business and regulatory environment. I am incredibly proud of our team here at the Port of Grays Harbor and confident these organizational changes and promotions will suit us well in serving our community and ensuring future growth,” shared Port of Grays Harbor Executive Director Gary Nelson.
