Choosing and Using OAE Equipment
for Hearing Screening
to review some highlights for newsletter readers. This webinar focused on choosing and using OAE equipment to screen young children in early care and education settings.
A few important points to keep in mind as you select or maintain equipment include:
- Find a pediatric audiologist who can advise you.
- Select DPOAE (not TEOAE) equipment.
- Don't pay for diagnostic features that you won't use. Lay screeners have more success when equipment is simple, requiring only 2-3 button pushes to initiate
and complete a screening.
- Consider the power source, whether the unit uses disposable or rechargeable batteries (and how long
the unit will hold a charge and takes to recharge).
- Determine whether equipment requires screeners to make a setting adjustment when screening children who have pressure equalization (PE) tubes.
- Find out whether foam tips are available for the equipment brand you are considering or using. Although foam tips are often more expensive, tip selection is simpler because the foam can be compressed prior to insertion and expands to fit ear canals of different sizes.
- Consider whether data storage and printing are needed or whether they add complexity and cost.
- Arrange with an equipment distributor to borrow several different models so you can "test drive" them in your own setting, with children, before deciding which model to purchase.
- Review the warranty and also talk with the distributor about whether loaner equipment is available if your equipment needs repairs.
- After you purchase a unit, remember to have it calibrated annually.
- Remember to check/change the nozzle if your equipment is not functioning as you would expect. If the nozzle no longer fits snugly on the probe or has become clogged with wax, you will need to change it, so always keep a few extra on hand.
- Be sure that screeners view, or review, ECHO Initiative OAE screening and equipment-related video and print resources.
