NWiR Seattle Council
Submitted by Brittany Wimbish, Fields Roof Service, Inc.
NWIR Seattle plugged in to the Roofing Contractors Association of Washing bi-annual event where they had Reid Ribble speak on “Workforce Development: A Roofing Industry Vision for The 21st Century”

Mr. Ribble talked about the future of the roofing industry and what we as contractors are doing to have an effect and to effect change in the industry as it relates to enhancing the workforce. As it stands right now the roofing industry is about 40,000 workers short. The primary reason is that we have a sociological problem. We must change the way we talk about ourselves and how we represent ourselves. People have a skewed view of construction and that has to change. The change begins with training and certifications. We need to create a clearly defined path that young people can see before they enter the field.

Thank you to Mr. Ribble for coming to Seattle and spending time with all of us!
Visit the NWiR Seattle Council webpage for more information for all events, past and upcoming.

Surviving the Storm: A Survival Kit for the Roof

Similar to the kits that help homeowners weather a storm, today’s roofing systems are equipped with built-in “survival kits” that help roofs stand up to the elements. For example, Owens Corning has developed several storm-worthy shingle technologies embedded in today’s roofs. As fall storm season gets underway, here are some roofing technologies to help defend against the elements...

MENTORING
Melissa Walker, Johns Manville; NWiR Mentoring Chair
The Mentoring Committee is super excited to launch two new features for NWIR members! See below for step-by-step directions on how you can find a mentor or mentee depending on your needs and goals. This information is followed by how to find the new Mentoring Blog section.

Mentor/Mentee Search Feature:
This feature is available to members only. The below steps will lead you to a search feature to find out more about other members who have elected to either be a mentor, or that want to be a mentee. Having the ability to expand your selection within this amazing network to finding a mentor is priceless, and a goal of National Women in Roofing. As a mentor, know that for some individuals reaching out is a big step. Therefore, this list also gives you, the mentor, a chance to make the first move in the mentor/mentee relationship and offer your experiences in assisting other women in the industry reach their goals. If you don’t find a match right away, continue to check in as people will continue to update their profiles. A mentor/mentee relationship is just a click away.
  • Start on the website. Click “Association Management System” under the Membership tab.
  • Select “My Profile” and hit the “edit” button. Scroll half way down and fill in both question M1 and M2 with either none or yes.

  • Hit Save
  • Select the fourth option on the header bar which is “Mentor/Mentee Search.”
  • This is where you can do a search of everyone that has opted in to either be a mentor or mentee. The person listed will include not only their name, but company and job title to help with finding a fit for your individual needs. Once you find someone select their profile where you can then find their contact information to reach out either via phone or email.
  • This is a perfect time to utilize the Mentoring Toolkit with your mentor/mentee match to establish the relationship and goals.
Mentoring Blog
A key to mentoring is the ability to share a learning experience. The Mentoring Committee has started a members only blog where each person is writing about personal experiences, what they did, and the lessons learned. These blogs give members a chance to comment and even recommend other topics for future posts.
  1. To locate the blog section, start on the website select “Mentoring” on the header bar and hit the “Members Only Blog.”
  2. An email with password information will be sent to members.
First-time attendees to NWiR Day and the IRE

Best of Success Recap
How to Know Your Worth and Leverage It
Elizabeth Calzadilla, iRoofing

We all know when a powerful woman walks into the room. More importantly, we know to listen when she grabs a microphone! Thea Dudley from Pocket Protectors LLC and Melissa Mulligan from M2C Services LLC inspired the National Women in Roofing event at the Best of Success conference that is produced by the team at Roofing Contractor Magazine and BNP Media. The event’s topic was Know Your Worth and How to Leverage It.

Many people in the work force accept less than they are worth, rarely demanding to be compensated for their value. With these tips, we hope to make the process a little easier for everyone looking to leverage their worth.
Upcoming Events
The newly created Events Committee is looking for women to join the committee. Please contact Melissa Mulligan if you're interested.
Are you speaking at an upcoming industry event? If so we want to know about it and share that information with our members. Email the information to Communications Committee Chair Anna Anderson .
