Dear Congregants,

In these past seven days, we have experienced loss in our community with the passing of loved ones. Loss is difficult in and of itself, but when it is tragic and unexpected, we become numb or angry and ask G-d “Why?”. I have learned over the years that those things we love come around in another form: rain goes into the ground and becomes part of the seed which over time becomes a flower whose beauty and smell brings a smile to my face.  El Malei Rachamim …G-d, full of compassion…You give me ways to remember the ones who are no longer here. Remove my grief and heal my broken heart so that I might smile again through the beauty of the rose.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Micha'el
THIS WEEK'S TORAH PORTION
By: Rabbi Kerry Chaplin

The veil between life and death is thin, and sometimes we see just how thin it is - how fragile each of us is. Sam’s death last week. The deaths of others in our extended community. We have looked straight through that very thin veil, and many of us see ourselves on both sides: “that could be me,” or even, “I wish that were me.”

Within Beit T’Shuvah, we often preach “to save one life is to save a whole world.” Sometimes, I remember that I am that world, that I can save my life, that I matter. And sometimes, I don’t. These words are etched in our sanctuary, but so many of us have not been in that sanctuary for so very long. Physical isolation and separation have made our worlds small, and some of us are forgetting that we are a whole world, that we matter.

The deaths in and around our community, the grief that we ourselves experience or that we witness in others reminds us that each of us is so, so very precious. It reminds me that I am so, so very precious. How will we ...click here to read more.

THIS WEEK'S SPOTLIGHT
Thea Goldstein

By Jesse Solomon

One of the biggest misconceptions in art is that skill equates to talent. This could not be further from the truth. Talent is not something one can earn. Talent is not something one can work toward. Talent, at its very essence, is built by stacking the bricks of experience into a tunnel of expression when all you want to do is build a wall of protection.

We have all seen videos on the internet of people playing concertos with extreme accuracy. To me, this is akin to teaching a dog a trick. Thea is the perfect example of the opposite of this. There is no one who has stepped foot in this facility that radiates more raw talent. As an artist myself, I am incredibly jealous. With no formal training, no music classes, or expert guidance, Thea has somehow managed to turn a lifetime of pain into beautiful melodies that instantly ring truth into the ears of anyone who hears them.

I remember the first time I heard one of her songs. We were both early in our sobriety and didn’t know each other at all. I was filled with anxiety when I first arrived at Beit T’Shuvah, so I basically lived on the smoking patio. The moment she struck her first chord and ....click here to continue reading.
