Summer 2021 Update

Week of meals at the
Rockville Women’s Center
In June, we served our annual "week of meals" at the Rockville Women’s Center. Thanks to your generosity, and especially to the women’s Bible Study group, we provided breakfast and dinner for thirty-five ladies for an entire week, Monday – Saturday. We are looking forward to serving these ladies again in the coming weeks.

Summer Lights at Little Lights – July 19 – 23
Two weeks ago, three ASC High School students (Hadley, Mason, and Will) joined me to serve at the Hilltop Terrace Little Lights location in Anacostia. The SUMMER LIGHTS program exists to provide kids a safe place to play and learn during the summer. The daily schedule included serving them a nutritious lunch, and some of the kids stayed later for a virtual learning time to practice coding or math in preparation to return to school in a few weeks.

In addition to getting to know the kids around Hilltop Terrace, our team also enjoyed meeting and getting to know members of Little Lights staff like Mr. Dominique, the manager of the Hilltop location. He first came to Little Lights as one of the kids who needed tutoring and a safe place. Today, Mr. Dominique is in graduate school and employed by Little Lights as one of their program directors. I tell you this because a remarkable thing happened last week: one of our HS students asked 10-year-old Khali, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” He responded, “I want to be like Mr. Dominique.” Overhearing this seemingly innocuous exchange, Mr. Dominique thanked our HS student for asking that question because (I’m paraphrasing here), by asking that question, you are reinforcing what we try to teach at Little Lights: that every child has a future, and we believe in their futures.

I praise God that He has a plan for All Saints kids AND the kids at Little Lights!

Hearts and Hands Reaching Out
by Elizabeth Stuckle
The nurse met me at the door saying that John has been asking for me, and when I walked into his room, his face beamed with joy. Love and care, warmth, connectivity and kindness – that’s what it’s all about. Members of the All Saints Visiting Ministry team give so much to those parishioners who are ill, injured, grieving, or shut-in.  But Visiting Ministry team members bountifully get back so much more in return. And often, over time, Visiting Ministers get very close to the ones they visit.

Whether someone is incapacitated for a brief time or for the long-term, everyone needs to feel loved and cared for. It is through that love and care that Visiting Ministers serve God and emulate Jesus’ actions and directive to care for others in need through service and prayer.  It is by reaching out our hands and hearts to others in need that we are truly extending Jesus’s hands and hearts to them.  It is through following Jesus’s role model that we learn to give of ourselves to others. I, as well as my fellow Visiting Ministers, feel so blessed to have the opportunity to serve God and our fellow parishioners in this way.

Visiting Ministers call, visit and send cards to parishioners of all ages. They also provide meals and rides to church for those who need it, and they take the Eucharist to parishioners who request it.  Some Visiting Ministers take flowers, soup, reading material, or whatever the individual likes or needs. Others take nothing except their loving hearts and smiling faces.  The Visiting Ministry team visits parishioners in a variety of settings – nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, and homes.

If you know of someone who would appreciate a visit or call, or if you wish to volunteer with the Visiting Ministry, please contact Elizabeth Stuckle at visitingministry@allsaintschurch.net.

It is with the greatest joy that we welcome and celebrate these individuals and households who have recently become official parish members of All Saints Chevy Chase. We give thanks for their devotion, commitment, and faithfulness.

Of course, membership is not required to worship, participate, and give at All Saints. But being a member is a wonderful thing. Parish members may vote at the Annual Meeting, serve on the Vestry, and are accounted for in our congregational reports.

Most of all, we want everyone at All Saints – regardless of membership – to experience God's grace and grow in the faith and love of Jesus Christ.

Ready to become a member? The process is simple, but deeply meaningful. Please fill out the attached Membership Form or contact one of the clergy or our Parish Administrator Lois McDonald.
