Bethlehem University Foundation is excited to announce the creation of the Sir John McGuckin Mentoring & Internship Endowed Fund. The Foundation created this new fund by resolution of the Board of Directors dated May 28, 2019. This establishment of this endowed fund is a "forever gift" that will ensure perpetual support for the John McGuckin Mentoring & Internship Program. Endowed gifts allow the Foundation to establish an investment fund, the proceeds of which are annually gifted to Bethlehem University. As this endowed gift grows, the annual support from the Foundation to the University for the Sir John McGuckin Internship Program will also increase.
The gift is made possible by the generosity of the Northwestern Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. The Lieutenancy, under the direction of its Lieutenant, His Excellency Dr. Thompson Faller, sought to create a long-term and sustainable future for the program. With a pledge of $100,000 and an initial payment of $40,000 from the Lieutenancy, the Board of Directors was able to establish the new endowed fund at the Foundation.
In 2010, the Northwestern Lieutenancy created the Sir John McGuckin Mentoring and Internship Program in honor of its former Lieutenant, His Excellency Sir John McGuckin. The program continues John’s legacy of supporting youth, especially in the Holy Land, via professional mentoring. The Lieutenancy has annually underwritten the costs associated with the McGuckin Mentoring & Internship Program which annually brings the top students from Bethlehem University to the United States and elsewhere for summer internships. Since its creation, the program has sent more than 80 students on international internship opportunities.
In celebration of the work of the Northwestern Lieutenancy in creating and supporting the program, and in recognition of the benefit the program provides for the community in the Holy Land, the Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, through the generosity of the Grand Magisterium of the Order, recently made an extraordinary gift of $50,000 to this new endowed fund. In recognition of his support, Cardinal O'Brien will be invested as a Patron of the Foundation at the upcoming Annual Awards Reception in Washington, DC.
