Broward Health to Open Mobile COVID-19 Testing Site
Fort Lauderdale, Florida -- In an effort to enable more patients to be tested for COVID-19, thus reducing risk of community spread, Broward Health opened its new mobile testing unit in Pompano Beach on March 19. Constructed in less than 24 hours, the mobile testing site will allow 300 registered patients to drive through daily and be swabbed for COVID-19 from their cars. The location is off-site; not at a Broward Health hospital.

To be tested, patients must pre-register for scheduled appointment times. No walkups or drive-ups can be screened or tested. To schedule a time to be tested, patients must have a written script from a physician and then call the Broward Health line at (954) 320-5730 to register. Once scheduled, patients will receive a confirmation number.

Photo ID, the written prescription for COVID-19 testing and the patient's confirmation number are required at the mobile testing site to be swabbed and tested. Test results will be sent to the prescribing physician, who will then alert the patient of their status.

UM Neurosurgeon Receives $3 Million NIH Grant for Innovative Research on Aneurysms
A neurosurgeon at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has been awarded a $3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study innovative approaches to treating cerebral aneurysms.

"Our laboratory will be taking a close look at the cellular and genetic factors that lead to life-threatening aneurysms," said Robert M. Starke, MD, professor of neurological surgery and neuroradiology, co-director of endovascular neurosurgery at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital, and director of neurovascular research. "We will also use innovative endovascular imaging techniques to examine aneurysms from inside the blood vessels."

Dr. Starke was one of 20 neurosurgeons in the U.S. to receive a five-year NIH grant. His grant focuses on finding better ways to prevent or treat cerebral aneurysms, which occur in 2 to 3 percent of the population, but may exceed 19 percent in high-risk groups. A ruptured aneurysm produces a devastating form of stroke with high rates of mortality and morbidity.
