Lamont Gallery presents Invented Futures: Chelsey Bonestell and Beyond through October 2. The informative and intergalactic virtual exhibition will remain on view to the public through this weekend, so be sure to check it out while you can, especially if you still haven't had the chance to get out to an in-person exhibition. Throughout his forty year long career, Bonestell "helped generations of curious skywatchers envision what it would be like to be . . . out there, where no one had gone before." His paintings influence all who travel with him, ultimately helping expand the respective science and astronomy fields, as well as other creative works delving into "what's out there" and what's "beyond". In addition to Bonestell's works, contemporary artists, Ron Miller, Jennifer Benn and Ursula Wise share their work that's been inspired by the late and admired artist. MACRO vs micro at AS220 Main Gallery
in Providence, Rhode Island, October 2—30
Teddy Trocki-Ryba, MACRO vs micro, 2021.
AS220 presents MACRO vs micro, Rhode Island artist, Teddy Trocki-Ryba's latest solo exhibition on view from October 2—30, an always important and fresh take on the experience of COVID-19 in the public and in private. As explained in Trocki-Ryba's artist statement, "the work displayed in MACRO vs micro seeks to juxtapose the MACRO experience of community and government with the micro experience of family and individual life." The "MACRO" works include 3D printed sculptures created through photogrammetry, "a process by which a series of photographs is used to create a digital 3D scan of a real-world object or space"; scans "presented with photo prints of their corresponding 'texture file," which is a "2D photo file which the computer wraps across the surface of the untextured 3D file" which reproduces a photorealistic 3D facsimile on a computer or smartphone; along with sculptures that utilize projectors and television screens. On the other end, "a series of micros, expressions of individual life and the experience of family--including several scans of children's toys which were created in collaboration with students as part of a digital arts class at the Jamestown Arts Center." While these technological processes and terms seem difficult to conceptualize for those unfamiliar, the exhibition shows just how relatable and engrained both the big and the small are; the near and the far are in our lives. AS220's Main Gallery is located at 115 Empire St. Providence, Rhode Island. The gallery is free and open to the public, Thursday and Friday from 12—5 p.m., or by appointment. The Umbrella Arts Center presents Wrack Line, a solo exhibition by artist-in-residence Michael MacHonen through October 31. The result of their coming in contact with and carried along by the forces of incoming waves and tides." This exhibition aims to remind us what brings our communities together, distance aside, "Whether through clashes or cooperative endeavors, these convergences have brought about the adaptation of living within a contemporary culture that is an ever evolving aggregate state." The Umbrella Arts Center is located at 40 Stow St., Concord, Massachusetts. The Umbrella Arts Center is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday—Sunday.
