CCCBHA Affinity Members
By Rusty Selix

For a variety of reasons, I am being asked much more than ever about the thinking behind various provisions of the Mental Health Services Act when we are writing it in 2003 and how that relates to some of the challenges we now have.
The act still looks like it correctly identified what was needed to fulfill our goals. But many parts of it have not been implemented the way they were envisioned ...(click title to continue reading)

Paperwork Reduction/Chart Note Workgroup Update
Paperwork Reduction/Chart Note Workgroup Update: Meeting with DCHS on October 30, 2017

CCCBHA has identified the issue of paperwork reductions as a top priority over the past year. A workgroup  has been working for some time   to address this issue,  led by Leslie Preston and Chris Stoner-Mertz. The Documentation Information Notice issued by DHCS was included in this effort, where CCCBHA combined its efforts and responses with CBHDA to address the issues and problems with the original draft of the Information Notice. A new memo was drafted recently and presented to Karen Baylor, Deputy Director for Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders within DHCS by Executive Director Paul Curtis along with Leslie Preston and Chris Stoner-Mertz. The memo addressed the issue that California has a much higher average time for chart notes as compared to the national average and made some specific suggestions on how to address the problem.  A copy of the memo is attached   here .
If you have any questions or concerns about the issues raised in the letter please contact Paul Curtis at  [email protected].
State Specific Medicaid Fact Sheet Now Available
The National Council developed a series of state-specific fact sheets to help aid its members in their advocacy efforts.  Each fact sheet illustrates the challenges of accessing healthcare services. The goal in creating these fact sheets is to show what it means to live in poverty in the US while having serious mental illness and addiction disorder.

The principal audience for these fact sheets are state legislators, Members of Congress, and their staff, while they can also be used to educate the media about the importance of
Medicaid to people with mental illness.
Included are three supplemental documents that can be used as reference when meeting with legislators, their staff, and the media:

Providers extend empathy toward their patients, but an over-extension of one's capacities can lead to problems. Compassion fatigue is a significant problem in the behavioral healthcare industry. Under certain circumstances, it can even have ethical or legal implications.
Preventing the onset of compassion fatigue is a matter of creating and sticking to an effective prevention strategy. In our blog post,"How to Prevent Compassion Fatigue"we cover five important steps in doing so. Click here to read more!
