California National Forest Closures
The USDA Forest Service recently announced the closure of 10 California National Forests to improve safety conditions for the first responders battling fires in these areas. These closures include Klamath, Lassen, Mendocino, Modoc, Plumas, Tahoe, Shasta-Trinity, and Six Rivers National Forests and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, and will be in effect through Labor Day (September 6th); the El Dorado National Forest will be closed through September 30th due to the Caldor Fire. This order includes "going into or being upon National Forest System lands", "being on a National Forest System Road", and "being on a National Forest System Trail" within the National Forests designated in this closure. Let's all do our part and remain patient with Forest Service staff and all other personnel managing these closures so we can return to recreating in our favorite outdoor spaces soon!

Outdoor Principles Highlight: Be Mindful
When recreating in the outdoors, being mindful of our actions and impacts are essential in doing our part to preserve outdoor spaces and make them a welcoming place for all. Outdoor environments are home to many diverse species of animals, and while taking an unmarked path or getting a closer look at a bird's nest may not seem detrimental, such actions can cause animals to feel unsafe in their environment and lead to their displacement. If you come across any wild animals or their homes, no matter how small, it is always best to keep your distance for your safety and theirs!

In addition to encountering animals while in the outdoors, you will more than likely bump into some fellow human adventurers. Whether the people we encounter are seasoned hikers or outdoor newbies, always show kindness to others smile, say hello, and ask how their day is. Be especially kind to staff in outdoor spaces and campgrounds, and always follow all directives from park staff. They are there to keep you safe and having fun!
