Generosity is defined as being kind in giving or being ready to give more than expected. As I have read the church reports from 2019-2020, I am utterly amazed at the generosity of our churches in their giving to missions. Our district giving to Alabaster is nearly $19,000.  Deputation giving is over $27,500 and child sponsorship is over $33,000. Our churches have made a commitment to be financially faithful to our missionaries and the giving has reflected your generosity. I am excited to celebrate this with you! I want to say Thank you!

2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

Calling our generation to a dynamic life in Christ

In Evangelism, we are called to BE God's light in the dark and ignored places of our world. We are to BE a faithful example of God's unconditional love. In BEING in Christ and BEING with others, we allow the Holy Spirit to work through our lives and we trust God with the results.

Through Discipleship, we journey together with other believers as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus. As we DO life together, we learn what it means to talk together, serve together, sacrifice together, fall and get back up together. We DO the hard work of becoming more like our Savior, living surrendered lives in community.

In Leadership Development, we challenge and empower youth and their leaders to GO out into their communities as models of Christ's servant leadership. We cannot afford to wait until we think we know enough; we must GO now, learning along the way.

" Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."   Matthew 28:19-20

As you are going,
THINK BIG: Every relationship, every interaction, all inclusive.

And make disciples,
START SMALL: You. Be one. Be a Christ-like disciple. Re-present Jesus.

Baptizing them, immersing them in Jesus,
GO DEEP: Pray. Empty yourself. Sacrifice.

Discipling Through a Crisis

One of my joyful memories is praying to receive Jesus as my Lord and Savior at the foot of my parents' bed when I was four years old. I didn't know much at four years old, but I am sure that I trusted Jesus that day, and my life was changed forever.

I have followed Jesus for the past 45 years. He has been perfectly faithful through every moment of every day. As a Christian, I have participated in countless Bible studies that have shaped and helped me mature spiritually. Equally important are the handful of people who have sincerely invested their life into mine. They have walked with me through the good and bad times, taught me about Christian ministry, and helped me to see what God was doing through all things. We call these people spiritual mentors.

One of the great surprises to me in my spiritual formation has been the positive effect crisis moments have had on my journey. Crisis moments are never enjoyable in the moment but are an essential component of the Journey of Grace. God uses them to discipline His children, and oftentimes, they lead to great spiritual growth. When I look back over my 45 years of following Jesus, I can point to the moments of greatest spiritual gain. All those moments happened during times of crisis!

Today, we are living through a global crisis. None of us would have asked for the global shutdown that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to every facet of our lives. At the same time, I see God doing something remarkable through this crisis. The church is being refined. We find ourselves asking one another to define the essentials of being a Christ-follower. I love the fact that what boils to the top is discipleship. When everything we have made church look like is taken away, what is left? Making disciples! Churches have become very small groups scattered throughout the city. In most cases, those small groups are families. It won't always be like this. This unique crisis will end. So the question is, what will we learn from it? I pray that we learn how foundational discipleship is to the life and growth of Christ's church!

This Connections newsletter has key articles that address the issue of "discipling through the crisis." In them, you will find inspiring ideas, useful resources, and encouragement. In these times of challenge and adjustment, even though the church buildings may be closed, remember that God's church, His people, are alive through discipleship!

Hello Heroes!

The word hero has been thrown around a lot lately in the midst of the
pandemic.  I do not use the word loosely.  I consider those that lead children each week a hero, I really do.  The love, care, concern, and spiritual instruction you freely give to children is amazing.  This time of shelter-in-place has been tough on us that miss our kids every week.  We miss their beautiful smiles, quirky questions, genuine curiosity, and infectious faith.  I know this time has forced you to think outside of the norm.  Ministry is different during the shelter order and most likely will forever be changed.

You are not alone in your determination to continually minister to the families within your church and community.  Each week I hear of fantastic, fresh ideas that NWIL churches are utilizing to maintain and expand their ministries.  We are a creative bunch!

I want to invite you to a new Zoom meeting happening every week during our shelter-in-place order.  Our NWIL Children's leaders meet online together to discuss various topics.  So far we have covered anxiety in children, best practices during the quarantine, and VBS alternatives.  If you would like to join our group on Zoom please go to the NWIL Children's Ministry Facebook page.   Click on the invitation that is posted every Tuesday.  Our meeting is currently at 2:00pm every Tuesday.  We understand a lot of leaders are essential, thus you working during that time period.  Therefore, we will record the meeting if we are able.  I will also post a summary of our meeting as well as links we shared during our Zoom Meeting.  This is open to any leader that is in charge of children, whether the Children's pastor, a volunteer, or the Senior Pastor.

We are in this together both during the pandemic and afterwards. Remember, you are doing better than you think you are.  I am proud of you and privileged to be on the same team as the other Children's Leaders on the NWIL District.  Let's learn from one another, support one another, and minister together.  See you on Tuesday!

Prayer Force Partners,

Greetings, and praise God! Most of us have had more time to pray over the past several weeks than we have in our lives. James 5:13 says, "Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray."

Have we taken advantage of this opportunity? Some confess they have learned through this time their prayer life has been more exposed than enhanced. One Christian shared, "I thought my faith was built on intimacy until this COVID-19. I had so much time to pray, I discovered my prayer life was weak. My faith was more propped up by church systems, Bible studies, church activities, etc. than established on a personal relationship with Jesus."

Church business had replaced intimacy with Jesus for my brother. He concluded, "I have had to reestablish my prayer life and rebuild my friendship with Jesus during this time."

Many of us may have had similar experiences during these unprecedented times. The great news: God is waiting with open arms for us all to return to Him in intimacy.

As we pray, please join me in celebrating God's amazing work in these times. As I speak with district superintendents, pastors, and leaders across the region, I hear good reports of new conversions, new venues of worship, more people participating in online church (one DS reports a church has more than doubled their giving in this time because they see the need is great), and even churches being planted.

Praise God for the Georgia District. Under the leadership of Kyle Pool and the hard work of Dr. Fred Huff (New Start Coordinator), the district has registered seven churches this year. The amazing thing is that two were registered during the pandemic! Praise God!

Please continue to pray for God to help us reopen our region safely, so we can continue to train leaders, release the church, and expand His Kingdom.

Please continue to pray for the top five important requests relating to evangelism and church planting:
1. For the harvest at 10:02 a.m. and 10:02 p.m. every day. (Luke 10:2)
2. That the USA/Canada Region will go from 5,126 to 10,000 total churches.
3. For God to raise up leaders to plant the additional churches to reach that goal.
4. That we will have the same passion, energy, and fire as the early Nazarenes and Church leaders.
5. That every Nazarene leads someone to Christ every year.

Praying with you for a great harvest!

Connect Community
Availability and access may have changed, but the heart of Connect is to meet people where they are both physically and spiritually. Each member of the Connect family (about 15 adults) are consistently provided with gas cards and food cards - to pass on to those who we anticipated would have need and to help meet the needs of those among us. Early on we adopted a weekly pick three plan. Pick three people: one you would normally interact with at least once a month, one you would interact with at least once every couple of months and one you haven't connected with in at least three months - and reach out on purpose. From this, active intervention was provided for one individual in critical need of professional medical care for profound depression and anxiety, two new zoom discipleship/Bible study groups have been formed, and numerous families have been identified and blessed with food, gas cards, protective masks and other practical aid. For Easter we adopted a ding dong ditch plan and delivered Easter Lilies (purchased remotely at a greatly reduced cost) to our Connect family, neighbors, and people specifically engaged since the start of this covid-19 crisis. We did not anticipate the positive impact of a $2 lily gifted to people longing for interaction, beauty and hope. People experiencing how we care are now questioning in a fresh way why we care and what makes us different. -Pastor Trish Wilson
Crossbridge
At Crossbridge, we have had a senior luncheon every month during the school year.  Our seniors look forward not only to good food but to fellowship together during this time.    With the Covid shelter at home order, we knew that the seniors would be missing this meal.  We are blessed with having a restaurant owner  and bakery owner attend our church.  This is a way to bless their businesses as we bless people in our community.

Working together, we are sponsoring Take-Out Tuesday each week.  We have expanded our recipient list to include not only seniors but families who need a little extra right now.  Volunteers pick up the food and deliver it each Tuesday.  We are looking at this as a way to bless our community, be the hands and feet of Jesus, and spread some love, hope and a smile during this difficult time.  It is also a great time to check in and see how people are doing as we call each week to see if they would like a meal.

We have received many, many thank you's for reaching out in this small way.  People know they are thought of and they are feeling cared for.
-Pastor Sherry Stevenson
Family
Covid19 stay at home request came just as we were starting a second church in Henry, but because we were trying different things already, like changing days and times, church differently didn't bother them at all. They took the challenge on with energy and enthusiasm. Making these changes has allowed Family COTN Malden and Henry to meet together on Sunday evenings via Zoom for church, instead of separately. The first Sunday night together warmed this pastor's heart as Malden and Henry attenders introduced themselves and welcomed faces to names. We have also done bible studies through Zoom, Facetime and group calls.

During the week of Easter, with the help of businesses and homeowners, we had a scripture scavenger hunt. Families sent us pictures of their hunt and what the scripture was in order to receive a small prize that was left on their door steps. We are looking forward to doing that again in a week or two.

Last week we started random acts of kindness. Some church members have dropped off baked goods, others have left encouraging cards and still others have dropped off bottles of bubbles with cards that say Laughter is Essential including a scripture reference for the individual and or family to look up. Fun and laughter are essential and we are enjoying the stories being told of trying not to get caught dropping stuff off to friends and strangers as we, with Gods help and direction, fulfill our vision of  bringing friends and strangers together for a time of fellowship, to grow in their faith and become the family of God.

We have stayed connected as two separate communities and we have stayed connected as a church body. We have also kept up with contacting leadership within our communities to see where we could be of service. Just like the plants and flowers are popping up all over so are we, praying we spread the fragrance of the knowledge of him to all who will listen.  We are social distancing but we are keeping ourselves visible and viable to each other and to the communities God has called us to serve.
-Pastor Ronda Hollars
Havana
Change is never easy but it does get better as time goes on.
Our people at our Havana Nazarene Church have pitched right in to try to help and encourage others along the way. Each Sunday morning at 9:30am we record our church service LIVE with a skeleton crew. It has been fun to see names from the community pop up saying they are watching our service too.  Our congregation is quite a quiet group, but we know they are there.

During the week we encourage people to contact each other by phone, email and texting.  Our SS teachers are keeping up with their classes as much as possible.  SS stories have been taken to their homes or sent in the mail so the kids can enjoy the Bible stories.  At Easter, baskets were dropped off at their doors.  One of our teens dropped off candy at the adult's homes and then they ran. It was fun trying to figure out who made the contact.

Children's books and songs have been recorded LIVE for the children to enjoy throughout the week. The teen teachers have been keeping in contact with their teens on Facebook and YouTube at the church's teen website. Some of the teens have been responding back.

Pastor continues to contact people by phone and texting.  He says he
he doesn't have a lot of free time because he still has to prepare a sermon. He is there and tries to keep contact through messages on our prayer line. God is in control.  We praise Him for his faithfulness.

One of the greatest blessings that we have found is in the implementing of our Online Groups through Zoom. This has been a special blessing to our Senior Adults. Our pastors have worked together one-on-one with all of our small group leaders to set them up in using Zoom. A pastor has also been present in each small group time to offer technological support and bring greetings to each group. One of the greatest joys has been contacting the senior adults in our church through individual phone calls to walk them through how to set up and use Zoom. The joy in this has been the moment when they first join a one-on-one video call with us. It is such a blessing to see each other's faces and to in that moment serve our seniors and provide pastoral care to them during this time. Who would have thought that offering tech assistance to seniors during pandemic could be such a pastoral blessing to us and them?
- Pastor Mark McCall
Point of Change
You can tell a lot about the personality and character of a church during uncertain times.  As the old adage goes, this is when we see the "true colors" of a congregation.  In my experience, most churches rise to the challenge and embrace each other, the community, and the mission when they are pressed.  So, as the lead pastor of Point of Change, I was excited to see how PoC would adapt to the COVID-19 challenge.  I was pleasantly not surprised.  Like so many churches, the staff and families at Point of Change-affectionately called, "PoCers"-predictably saddled up and rode into the Coronavirus whirlwind with their determined guns a-blazing.  They demonstrated an anointed and "always-ready" flexibility and willingness to sacrifice.  The staff embraced an opportunity to work harder even during the "shut down."  Here are just a few things that the Lord has led PoC to do during this season of quarantine and uncertainty.
  • Connection:  The PoC|Leadership team-which includes the church board, staff, and key leaders-divided up the list of PoCers and made sure that every person received a phone call each week.  This alone has been a huge blessing leading many to feel more connected than before.
  • Engagement:  The staff pastors have each shared weekly videos via social media for encouragement, levity, Biblical instruction, and care.  They have continued their small groups, age-based ministries, and weekly meetings through online venues.
  • Entrepreneurship:  PoCers who have been led to develop ministries at work or in the community have transitioned to online classes and instruction.
  • City-Loving:  Each Saturday morning we have participated in a socially-distanced "stay in your car" prayer drive.  We have loved praying over our city and have been careful to target schools, hospitals, churches, local businesses, and government agencies.
  • The Sunday Morning Experience:  Our tech and worship teams jumped in with both feet to get a streaming ministry in place, and PoC has seen an increase in our attendance and giving because of the Holy Spirit's work there.  We will now be able to continue with this ministry after the time of quarantine.  We have pickup up new PoCers and give all the glory to God.
I wish I could go on and tell you more details about the ministry that God is doing through PoC, but the thing that I'm the most excited to report is that we have experienced new life in Christ and have seen a congregation take many steps closer to each other and Jesus.  I'm also learning that PoC is not all that unique.  As I've talked to NWIL's incredible leaders and pastors across, I've see once again that our wonderful district is FILLED with creative, inventive, sacrificial, generous, and caring people who are consistently at their Spirit-led best when stretched missionally.  I have personally learned from each of you.  PoC and I continue to be students of your amazing ministry.  Thank you.  We're in it together.
  -Pastor J. Todd Keller
Roseville
If you were to consider a low double-digit attendance church with the latest technological advancement a twenty-two-year-old sound system to have a presence on the internet, it may have been a stretch for anyone to imagine.  Before the COVID-19 pandemic made a presence the Roseville Church of the Nazarene did not seem like it had much going for it, but God saw it differently.

God had a plan way before the COVID-19 reared its ugly head.  He brought people to the Roseville Church who had the desire to serve the church.  One of these had the knowledge of web page development and new the importance of making a social presence known in a more relevant way to reach those the church would not be able to reach like it could before.  A web page and Facebook has been implemented and it is reaching more than the low double digit church ever thought it could.  A mobile app is in the works hoping to be launched soon.

Roseville Church has been able to reach over a thousand people through Facebook within a fifty-mile radius, most of them on a mobile phone. The web page has reached more people than it had in the last ten years of meeting publicly and gaining more by the day.  God had a plan, and He is on the move.

If anyone had any doubts about this small church having a huge impact on the community, they have been quickly removed.  God saw it differently and has blessed Roseville with the right people at the right time.  He is on the move and we are excited to see what He has in store for Roseville, and the impact we will have for His kingdom as we share His word with those who need to hear it.
-Pastor Mark Johnson
Southside Community Center

April 22, 2018 was the dedication celebration for the former El Bethel Church of the Nazarene, the literal birthday of Southside Community Center.

Southside Community Center is proud to be used by God and considered "essential" in these strange times. Nothing has stopped SCC from being a Stronghold for the community to run to for assistance.  God has seen fit to bless the last two years effort to Transform Community One Relationship at a Time.  He has taken those relationships and deepened them both with our families and our community partners.

SCC has been a school lunch site through our two-year relationship with Peoria School District 150 for some of the most vulnerable families in the state of Illinois.  The relationships that have turned into passionate partnerships have literally blossomed in response to the pandemic. We have been in the position to help companies like Starbucks get the milk that filled their coolers directly to the families who need it the most.  We were able to shift our partnership with Peoria Grown from healthy cooking and nutrition education classes to bags of fresh fruit packs for our families. As well as the Rotary in Peoria partnering with us to provide formula diapers and wipes to help our families.  And Pekin First has been a blessing by giving members the opportunity to help by donating cleaning supplies and essential items like toilet paper for our families because LINK Assistance does not provide the dignity of purchasing the items necessary to follow the COVID-19 cleaning and hygiene protocols.  Our partnership with Kingdom Life Peoria has helped bring clergy together to identify gaps in services and plug church leaders and their congregations into their niche to fill the Gaps.  God is using SCC in a vital way and we could not be more blessed how God's favor has shown on us.

SCC's Parent Support and Education outreach as well as Dinner Church have transformed into power online ministries both keeping our families connected and reaching out to new friends all over the country.  Even though we can meet for our family meal at Dinner Church at the Center, we are still able to meet for dinner because of technology.  Austin Smith, Assistant Director, has taken part of the Dinner Church team and created a care team and check on our 67 families weekly, while the other part of the team cooks and delivers meals to our families.  Then everyone is invited to bring their meal to the device of their choice to watch and interact with Pastor Irene for Tell the Story on Facebook Live.  Miss Nikki has been going live each Monday for MOMS Group. Miss Deeann is collecting and organizing our Prayer Force Ministry and getting prayer needs out to our Prayer Warriors.

Summit
Staying connected to our Summit family during these unsettled times takes some creativity.  Just keeping in contact with them is key. I try to call, email, or text each of them on a weekly to bi-weekly basis. I write and send cards to them as well, especially my friends that don't have internet or text. I make Wal-Mart runs, or grab meds. or whatever else they might need and run it by their homes so that they don't have to get back out. Sometimes while I am making dinner for my family I will pack up single serving sizes and take to our single friends. My FAVORITE thing we did was announce that I would be sitting in the parking lot at a certain time one day and they could drive by (stay in their car) and say hi...we had 15 cars come by and we got to see each other and visit . It was FANTASTIC and brightened all of our days. We are meeting together on Sundays for online worship with our Parent church (Pekin First) and love how we are getting to know each other and really feeling apart of all that is happening there, but we CANNOT WAIT to worship together again at Summit where WE BELONG.  -Pastor  Gretta Nash
Wyoming
On March 22nd, 2020, three incredible spirit filled and spirit led women at Wyoming Church of the Nazarene began to POUR Hope, Encouragement and tremendous amounts of love into their community! They began to make meals twice a week and serve them up for free and to this day of writing April 29th, they have blessed people with 1,120 meals served and there is no count for this evening or next week yet! They plan to do this until this pandemic is over or they are no longer needed to supply food for folks who are shut in or otherwise.

I need to tell you as their interim pastor and the senior pastor of an organic church this has moved me in ways I never thought possible, I feel blessed that the Lord lets me even help them when I can! The community is touched and they feel this Spirit of Christian giving and I just know that when we are back to "normal" the community will never forget what our Lord provided and that He loves them SOOO much! Alicia, Debbie, Melissa & Marilyn you are the closet to Jesus with skin on I believe my heart has ever witnessed. I love you all SO much and cannot begin to thank you for listening to and obeying your Heavenly Father! -Pastor Rita Lovell

Church Multiplication Endowment Fund
Give a GIFT that doesn't stop Giving!

Would you give $1.00 a month if it never stopped giving, never wore out, never changed its usefulness or purpose and transformed lives?

How many times do we give a gift to someone only to see it discarded at a later date or discover it was never used as intended? Have you ever wanted to give a gift that would never grow old or wear out, that would always be used for good and made a difference for eternity? NOW you can!

Jesus said "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."

Would you partner with your Northwestern Illinois District's vision to plant churches?  You might wonder how you can make a difference or even be a part. Everyone can. We need some to plant, we need everyone to pray and we need many to invest.

The Church Multiplication Endowment Fund is designed to reach unreached people living on the NWIL District for Christ. Every dollar given will continue to give in perpetuity. An endowment fund uses the interest from the principle to do kingdom work.  Will you help fund this goal?

Currently, our district property funds have been invested in planting 22 new churches these past three years and the district is in need of capital to continue to plant more! We need your help. Presently, there are 36 more potential church plants in various stages of planning which will require additional funding support.

Help us reach our GOAL of planting 300 churches by 2030.  We see 300 churches as 3,000 disciplemakers who disciple 15,000 disciples gathering with 30,000 worshippers.  Every dollar you give will continue to reach people for Christ your whole lifetime and beyond.

Would you consider a GIFT of $1.00 a month?  We are not trying to take money from your local ministry where you give your tithes and offerings. We are asking for many to give a little.  Our initial goal is 5,000 giving at least $1.00 a month. Would you be one of those 5,000 making a commitment to create a movement to plant churches that change lives?  Here are ways to give:

 1. You can give to your local church by marking your check or cash gift "NWIL CM Endowment" and your church treasurer will take it from there.

 2. You can also choose to give online if you want to set up one time or reoccurring payments using debit/credit/Electronic Check on the district website at nwilnaz.org/GIVE/ On District Church Planting or direct  CM Endowment Giving LINK. Or scan this QR code at the bottom of this article.

3. You can send a check or cash to NWIL District, 3520 Broadway St., Pekin, IL 61554 (please indicate CM Endowment on check memo)

We are also looking for those who might like to make greater kingdom investments!

You can give cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, livestock, grain, or other personal property.  Basically, any asset of marketable value can be used to help fund this endowment. There are also charitable gift annuity options that allow you to specify the endowment fund or another ministry of your choice while allowing you to receive income for your lifetime and when you pass, your gift goes to the endowment fund or specified ministry. CLICK HERE to see other ways to model generosity. Gifts can be given in memory or in honor of someone.

Large or small: Why not leave a lasting legacy that lasts more than your lifetime.
