FLINT, MI - Flint Symphony Orchestra presents their 2021-2022 concert series, Renewal, kicking off its 104th season live and in-person at Whiting Auditorium. The six concerts feature music from different classical musicians and performances by guest artists.
Tickets, on sale now, are available as season subscriptions and packages. Create a package with tickets to three or more concerts for discounted pricing. Single show ticket sales begin September 1. Genesee County residents enjoy a 30% discount on all Flint Symphony Orchestra Classical Concert Series single tickets and subscriptions. This program is funded in whole or in part by the Genesee County Arts Education and Cultural Enrichment Millage funds, putting tax dollars at work.
“One of the most powerful aspects of live performing arts is the connection it creates,” said Rodney Lontine, Flint Institute of Music president and CEO. “That connection is something so many of us have craved for more than a year. There is something for everyone this season at FSO.”
The season starts October 2 with Spanish composer Manuel de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain. The concert will be performed by the FSO and New York-based pianist Abdiel Vázquez. Maestro Diemecke will then take the audience to Athens with Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In mid-November, FSO will visit the spiritual world in Debussy’s Danses Sacrée et profane, featuring harpist Amy Ley with the FSO. Then, take a tour through the Austrian countryside as you listen to Beethoven Symphony No. 6, Op. 68, F Major (Pastorale).
The new year brings Italian classical pianist Alessio Bax who Gramophone magazine calls “among the most remarkable young pianists today.” Bax will join the FSO in one of the most popular piano concerti of all time, Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor. The February concert also includes Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring which paints a vivid picture of the American east, including the Shaker song “Simple Gifts.”
Also in February, Grammy award-winning Patti Austin will join FSO musicians for a Tribute To Ella Fitzgerald. Our Black Classical Origins concert for the season, it’s an evening to remember and reflect on the brilliant stylings of the First Lady of Song in this jazzy pop tribute.
March comes in like a lion with Vivaldi’s Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons). The best known of Vivaldi’s works is a group of four violin concerti written about Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. The program also features The Moldau by Bedřich Smetana and composer Alberto Ginastera’s Estancia.
April features Jacques Ibert’s Flute Concerto, which was written in 1933 for celebrated French flutist Marcel Moyse. The program also features Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, Winter Dreams, a celebration of the romance of Winter.
The season ends in May with Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, Carlos Chavez’s Toccato for Percussion and Ottorino Respighi’s suite for small orchestra The Birds (Gli Uccelli)

"The health and safety of our audience and artists are of utmost importance," shared Lontine. New air purification systems have been installed in all of FIMs venues with state-of-the-art virus-killing technology. In addition, each venue is cleaned before a performance with an electrostatic sprayer that applies a CDC-approved disinfectant that kills COVID-19 and other viruses.
"As the world comes back to a new normal, know that we are as excited as ever to welcome patrons back safely for the amazing season we have prepared. We are following current MDHHS guidelines for COVID-19 protocols. Should anything change, we will notify our patrons."
