Greetings UPCDA friends and colleagues!
As the holiday season draws near, it is time to think about what all we have to be thankful for in our lives. We have been blessed with a fabulous profession, that we must never take for granted and we must support those who defend our profession with us. (Hint: join us for Dentists' Day on the Hill in February) But the thing that comes to my mind when writing this letter is to be thankful for the great and exciting start to our UPCDA membership year. We have had several popular social events and mixers, intriguing and much-needed continuing education seminars, and we have such great fellowship and friendship in our group that I literally had to beg everyone to sit in their seats and stop talking with each other so we could start (and finish) our meeting last month on time. 6:45 prompt - love you all :)
Now that our October meeting on Medical Errors is in the books (thanks Dr. Grimaudo!), we can look forward to our joint meeting with our brethen in the Pinellas County Dental Association. The joint UPCDA-PCDA meeting will be held on Wednesday November 13th at the Hilton Carillon Park with the continuing education being presented by Dr. Mark Piper on 'Taking the Fear out of Having TMJ Patients'. If there is anything we all know about TMJ, it is that you can never learn too much about it. I always love having a new patients come in and tell me 'Dr. Albert, I have TMJ'. To which I promptly (and silently) think, 'Well, everyone has TMJ. 2 of them actually!'
Now that my attempt at dental humor is over, let me just remind you of our plans for December. Our Holiday Event will be attending a Tampa Bay Lightning game together with bus transportation to and from the Lighting-Stars match up on Dec 19th. Tickets are limited (40 total), cost is $75 per person with ticket and bus transportation included, and one guest per member is permitted. If the initial pre-purchased block of 40 is completely sold, we can obtain additional tickets as needed although they may be in a different section. So make sure to reserve your spot today by emailing Lissette and securing your tickets - first come/ first serve!
Hope you all have a great month- look forward to seeing you November 13th for Dr. Piper's seminar! Bring both your TMJs! ;)
Sincerely,
Jeremy M. Albert, DMD, MS

FUNDING NEEDED TO IMPLEMENT FDA/YOUR PRIORITIES
During the 2019 Legislative Session, the Florida Dental Association successfully passed legislation that was signed into law to establish the Dental Student Loan Repayment Program and the Donated Dental Services program. Although the policy was approved to establish these programs, the Legislature did not allocate funding needed to implement these programs. The Department of Health (DOH), which is the entity these programs will be administered by or contracted through, projected that the state could implement these programs at
approximately $773,000.
During the 2020 Legislative Session, the FDA will pursue funding to help ensure that these programs will be implemented to help increase access to dental care around the state.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
You can help get support from the Legislature by clicking

and
responding to the
Legislative Alert. Legislators are currently holding interim committee meetings in Tallahassee for the next two months before session starts in January 2020. It is important that this funding priority is on their radar prior to the development of the budget recommendations.

Dental History in Pinellas County
Dear UCDA Members,
One hundred and fifty years of Pinellas County (Hillsborough until 1912) Dentistry is now a book "From Rocking Chairs to Robotics" by Jon Wilson, a historical journalist who captures the passion, talent, personalities and determination of a wide variety of dentists who forged a primitive reaction to suffering into a noble profession with the highest ethical standards to achieving community oral health. Time has proven that as the mouth is healthy so is the body. Dentists are Medical Specialists and their civic efforts to improve physical health are unequaled in the medical field which has too long ignored the contribution of dentistry to the science of health. Click here to place your order.
Hopefully, our new generation of dentists will relish the stories and be inspired by 'the old guard' on our "founding fathers" who sacrificed monetary gain and fame for integrity in being an advocate for their patients in the face of the economic pressures. The book will make you proud you are a dentist, belonging to and unusually gifted association. The battles that have been fought will be fought again to keep commercialism, commonization and industry control at bay at the same time preventing government intrusion that impairs doctor/patient relationships. The book will equip our grandchildren dentists with the knowledge and fortitude to take dentistry into a desirable intentional future.
Our great history should be a sellout. Hope everyone of us will want the pride of our profession on our office bookshelf.
Dr. John Harrison with the spirit of Dr. Chuck Martin.
